EW Interview with Erica Messer

'Criminal Minds' boss on team's reunion in season 7 premiere, 'emotional aftermath' to come

by Sandra Gonzalez

Before we talk about the season 7 premiere, I offer my advance apologies. The headline you see above is a tease until 1 a.m. ET. That is when I will post my full chat with Criminal Minds executive producer and showrunner Erica Messer. (We have to give EW’s west coast readers a chance to watch!)

In the meantime, however, I wanted to give you a place to chat about the season premiere, which found Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) returning to work with the team — and baddie Ian Doyle (Timothy V. Murphy)! — on a case involving Doyle’s son, who’d been kidnapped.
Star Thomas Gibson, who held a premiere party last night for the cast and crew, says of the episode and season, “It felt like a big family reunion. We’re really counting our lucky stars,” he said. “To quote Kirsten [Vangsness], ‘Erica wrote the s–t out of it, and Glenn [Kershaw] directed the s–t out of it.’ It’s really a new beginning to the show.”

In our chat with Messer, conducted while she was attending said bash at Gibson’s house (pause here to recognize how incredibly adorable that is), she breaks down the very special episode and chats about what’s to come.

  1. I liked episode one of Season 7, but I am a bit concerned about the rest of the season when I read this EW interview. I know that most people will disagree with me, but I DO NOT want a Hotch romance this season. In this interview it APPEARS that Messer strongly hinted at a Hotch romance when she said that Hotch needs to smile this season & let go of Haley's death(and we will see Hotch in a new light). I hope I am wrong, but unfortunately I do not think that I am. Also, Thomas Gibson has stated he hopes to see this happen. I am NOT IMPRESSED with a romance story line for Hotch. Maybe in the last few episodes of the series but not this season! In my opinion, the writers could deal with Hotch coping with Haley's death in a MUCH MORE CREATIVE way. I think that romances take away from the show. I agree with Shemar Moore when he said that his character did not have time for romances this season! I especially do not want Hotch to have a romance yet. I want to see more profiling & team interaction not romantic stories. I can watch any other show if I want to see romances. We have enough of that with JJ & Will/ Garcia & Kevin. I liked Criminal Minds because it focused on profiling & some information about each agent but did not delve too much into romances for the characters. I want to learn more about why Hotch is so serious & dedicated to his work not see him in another relationship!

  2. And I for one hope the romance story won't concern Reid. There are much more interesting things to show about that character than a romance.
Let him shine with his brain, let him be the genius who solves puzzles and riddles, let him outsmart everyone, let him become the part time professor MGG wants him to be (science professor - mathematics, chemistry or engineering would work very well for him).
He's, by far, the smartest member of the team (there's no competition), he's in a league of his own. I would love to see his screen time emphasizing that very essential aspect of the character.

  3. I agree that Reid should have a more complex story than a romance. I also do not want Hotch to get a romance since I think his character is also more complex than this. We already had the Hotch & Haley storyline. A romance is not creative! I fear though that Hotch will be in a romance sometime this season since Messer hinted at this. I am shocked and disappointed that the writers will take this route. I miss the old Criminal Minds.
