Criminal Minds - SPOILER! Casting News

By by Sandra Gonzalez

Former Dirty Sexy Money star Bellamy Young will guest in an upcoming episode of Criminal Minds as Beth, a museum curator who meets Hotch (Thomas Gibson) in the park while he’s training for triathalon.

Before the start of the season, showrunner Erica Messer teased a new romance for one of the agents, but declined to give details. She had also hinted, however, that she wanted this season to see a new beginning for Hotch, whose ex-wife was killed a few season ago. “Hotch … has been going through the motions of raising a child as a single working parent and mourning the loss of a great love,” she told EW after the premiere. “And even though he and Haley were divorced, she was his first love, his only life and all that. We’d really like him to smile again and let go of that. It’s going to be new and exciting for all of us and the audience.”

  2. Oh, I like it ! And I'm so glad Hotch isn't getting together with Prentiss.

  3. Hooray for Hotch! He deserves some happiness! : )

  4. I am done watching the show. I do not want a romance on the show for any of the characters especially Hotch. Criminal Minds has changed for me this season. I will watch the old episodes, but that is all. I am greatly saddened by this news.

  5. I have to agree with the above comment, I love Criminal Minds, but romance on the show is a definite turn off. Its not what the show is about!

  6. Relax, it's not the first time the show has included romance and I doubt the romance will take up more than a minute or two in the beginning of an episode or at the end of an episode, or perhaps it'll even be something that's just mentioned occasionally and not shown that much. His marriage was always played out well and it never took up much time or became a distraction from the case of the week.

  7. Even if, the romance does not take up much time on the show, I still do not want to watch if Hotch gets a romance. I liked the old show. I wanted Thomas Gibson to come back for season 7 but not if Hotch was going to get a romance. I will never watch the show again. This is a very sad day for me concerning Criminal Minds since it was my favorite show and Hotch was my favorite character. I will have to watch another show on Wednesday nights and watch reruns of seasons 1-6. I know some people do not care if Hotch gets a romance, but I do not like this at all!! Before I stop watching the show, I would like to thank the cast, writers, & producers for creating 6 great seasons of Criminal Minds. Thanks also to Criminal Minds Roundtable for letting fans post their opinions. However, I cannot watch the show anymore after what I just read.

  8. yes i agree with sf1387
Look at Will and J.j,Kevin and Garcia. These romances do not distract the case of the week.Nobody said that Hotch will find his love.It can be anyone but of course not to J.j and Garcia. You exaggerate too much.We must see all the episodes

  9. I don't think there is anything wrong with Hotch meeting someone. I mean the first time we ever saw Hotch he was with Haley putting together a baby crib. I don't think him meeting someone now makes the show so different from before. Just my opinion. I think it is a good thing and a natural progression. I have seen every episode from the beginning and I am sure I will watch until the end. Love season 7 so far!

  10. The fact that a couple of you said that you're not going to watch anymore is so, dare I say it, pathetic. Sorry if that seems harsh, but you're really going to abandon a show you say you love because of this? Hotch deserves to be happy and I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I'm sure they won't make it into a soap opera.

I had feeling (way before Erica teased us and said someone was going to have a new romance) that it was eventually going to be Hotch, anyway.

Honestly, you're acting as if it's the end of the world. That's what's saddening, really. To each his own, I suppose.

  11. From the beginning they have shown us small moments of team interaction and their life before the case and after, I really doubt that will change so much. It has been consistent so far this season. We were told we get more of a personal glimpse to the team but it does not mean that's what the whole show will be about.

As much as I love all of the spoilers we get, and by no means want them to stop, I worry it is only doing damage. Peoples expectations of what they want are high and when they don't come to fruition there is a lot of disappointment. Everyone has a right to their opinion and appreciate an opportunity to express it.

Take the show for what it is. It's okay not to like it, everyone has a preference and an opinion. They said this season is for the fans but they can't please everyone. At first I was not sure how I felt about the direction but realized it is early in the season and they can't cover everything and the case in one episode.

As far as a love interest for Hotch why is that so unbelievable? People have to move on eventually why can't he?

We need to have faith in Erica and the team of writers and producers. Of course the season will have a different feel but let's give it a chance.

  12. He promised Haley he'd show his son he wasn't always so serious and that he'd teach him about love so I think it's great that Hotch is lightening up a bit, running triathalons and possibly getting some lovin. It's about time. The man has been miserable since the beginning of Season 3.

  13. Happy to see that Hotch will get a love interest, it is about time! Those who says that CM is not about that, have you watched CM? First scene of episode one season one was Hotch with Haley talking about babies names! In the romance department we have JJ and Will, Garcia and Kevin, Reid and Lyla and Austin, Gideon and Sarah, Morgan and, maybe, Tamara, Rossi and all his ex-wives!

Beside, Hotch did promised Haley he would show Jack love, how can he do that if he never find someone else to love and share his life?

I for one cannot wait to see that episode!

    ReplyDelete
  14. As long as I do not have to see it in every episode I`m fine with it. I prefer Hotch happy in love to another Hotch drama story line.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If the people that think this will "ruin the show" for them want to leave I say, hasta la vista baby. I am sure this will be but a small segment of the episode but if they can't even take 5 minutes of Hotch talking to a woman, maybe asking her out to dinner, well bye-bye.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh I think this is lovely!

Granted I suffer from a bad case of Married Woman's Disorder, I'm happily in love and now I want all my friends happy in love as well. Which extends to the fictional characters who's stories I enjoy.

I'm sure that CM will remain the darkest, creepiest crime show on network TV (at least in my opinion) and I do love that about it, but I think a bit of romance sprinkled about the edges is a good thing. And Hotch has been through so much, he does deserve it.

Also, if he does run the triathlon, I hope to see some if not all of the team out cheering him on.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree with HotchFan, we have already seen the other characters in 'romantic' situation.
Kevin and Garcia, Hotch and Haley, JJ and Will, Gideon and Sarah, Morgan and Tamara, ... we're also going to meet one of Rossi's ex wife, (though, I can't call the whole thing with Lila Archer a "relationship").

Now, I would love to see Prentiss getting a nice boyfriend in the future, maybe not in the near future, but at some point when she has healed enough.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I completely agree with the comment right above. Everybody is happy and has somebody special in their lives. It is really time for Prentiss! Please don't forget about her love life...

I hope this new angle to Hotch's story line will bring a new color to his life. As long as the writers keep this in short segments, it should be fine seeing him with somebody...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Seriously? This man barely interacts personally with the people he works with, and suddenly he'll go on a date with a woman he meets at the park.? Unrealistic.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sure Hotch has been miserable and needs to smile. WHAT ABOUT PRENTISS? She hasn't been on a great date since like, Season 2, and her last long-term "relationship" was probably with Ian Doyle. If anyone needs a love interest, its Emily Prentiss. So, please, get her a handsome man who she can "meet at the park".

    ReplyDelete
  21. Since when did CM turn into a love show? I thought that was like Grey's Anatomy. I loved the older seasons where more emphasis and news was placed on the unsubs and the profiling and the cases etc. Nows, its all Hotch needs to smile : quick lets have him meet a girl at the park since apparently that;s the only way to make him happy, according to Erica Messer.

Well, guess what, it's not. Hotch does not need a love interest to be happy. Breen even mentioned that there will be a female unsub in a unexpected way. I think that Beth will turn out to be a serial killer.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tsk tsk tsk, writers, I thought you had learned from the Ashley Seaver fiasco. I mean, seriously this is gonna be like Ashley Seaver all over again, with the fandom split into liking her and immensely hating her. I hope this actress and the writers (Erica) is ready for a truckload of hate directed to them.

  23. Nooooo!!! Hotch and Prentiss all the way....at least I want some subtle hints of Hotch/Prentiss ...Please Breen help us. HP 4Ever

    ReplyDelete
  24. Are some fans seriously thinking that Beth will turn out to be a serial killer just because they don't like the idea of Hotch finding love outside of the team ?
People, the plan is to put a smile on Hotch's face, not to give him more misery !

    ReplyDelete
  25. I know most people will disagree with me, but I think I am allowed to have my opinion concerning this matter. I do not like that some posters call people who do not like a love interest for Hotch "pathetic". I respect other people's opinions, but for me a show with Hotch getting a love interest is not the same show to me! Why can't another character get a love interest? Even Morgan is not getting a love interest since he is busy chasing criminals. And, Hotch has more time than Morgan? This is new to me. When does Hotch have time for another relationship? And, what happened to the idea that Hotch will be close friends with JJ this season? I really hate the idea of Hotch getting a romance since I think he should spend more time with his son and is not yet ready to move on from Haley. The writers in my opinion are making a huge mistake and can think of much more creative story lines for Hotch. We got one episode in season 7 which mentions Haley but that is it? Now Hotch just moves on to someone new. I thought Hotch would not get a love interest until the end of the show. I do not think the writers are really exploring the full potential of his character anymore. I wanted the writers to be more creative, but I guess today's news confirmed that Hotch is the one who gets a romantic interest. I am so upset. I thought so according to previous news, but I held onto one last glimmer of hope that it was for another character. I guess if Thomas Gibson wants Hotch to get a love interest the writers will listen. How predictable and boring. Even if I wanted Hotch to find love someday, I do not think I would want it on the show since I know this might divide some of the fan base. Before this happened, I really think that the fan base was more unified. Why is a love interest for Hotch necessary? It is not! I am not even a Prentiss & Hotch shipper. Hotch can be happy without a new love interest. I feel that so many people equate "true" happiness with relationships. Why does smiling for Hotch mean a relationship? Many people never marry again after someone dies and not everyone is happy in a relationship. I thought Criminal Minds was a creative show before this happened. I feel so sad today that I will be saying goodbye to this show as of tomorrow. I loved the show, and I watched the show mainly because of Hotch. I have lots of scripts and pictures signed by Thomas Gibson so I guess these are the only remaining reminders of the good days of Criminal Minds. I thought episode 7.04 was excellent, but now I find out this news. Criminal Minds was not only entertainment for me but was also an important part of my life. To me Criminal Minds has officially ended today since it is not the show I once loved & looked forward to every Wednesday. Someday I guess I will watch the Season 1-6 DVDs again because this is all that is left in my opinion of one of the best shows that ever existed on TV. I know people will not understand why I would stop watching the show, but I just cannot watch anymore. I enjoyed participating in CM chats & discussions. Goodbye Criminal Minds/Hotch!

  26. What happened to all the subtexts between Hotch and Prentiss? I agree with someone above : Once again, Ashley Seaver, remember?

I will continue to watch as I like the show but come on, writers!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I`m not so worried about the fact that Hotch does get a love interest. I am more rolling my eyes that Hotch has the time for a love interest AND the time to train for a triathlon And to read with Jack every night AND to coach Jack`s soccer team AND to lead the team AND to do not only his but also Strauss`job. And all of that while being away on cases in another state most of the time and while being three and a half month in Pakistan. They are turning the character into a very unrealistic almost comic book character-like super hero IMO.

  28. As much as I'm sure there are many of us who would like to hold a candle to Haley's memory and true she was the love of his life, but we are talking about one young handsome unit chief here, if this is some character development we will see for him and this is in the form of a love interest well I say so be it.

Given who and what he is I could never see him pursue a relationship within the team or in the FBI and I'm glad this is not the case.

If this show goes on for a few more seasons and I hope to god it does as there is so much more they can do with it from cases to character development, it would be nice to see these developments, it would be nice to see Hotch have more in his life than just work and realistically everyone does so why not him, would be nice to see the change of values in his life after all that has happened to him, and to see how both he and Jack deal with these changes,  god knows there are so many people in real life who do.

Moreover how much of these characters outside lives have we really seen in six seasons, whatever has been written has only been when it has worked with the story lines so I don't honestly think we are in jeopardy of this becoming a soppy love story, not with the sort of story lines we are treated to each week which I can't see changing anytime soon.

I for one love the 'family' side of Hotch's character which brings out a whole different dimension and a softer side to him and I  hope we see this  explored.

I have every confidence in Erica and her team and this amazing cast and I'm looking forward to more character developments for all of these characters.  I wrote season six off but with the turn of events and the team back together S7 has not let down so far and hopefully will go from strength to strength.

I agree and to me him finding someone new is the natural progression in his storyline. I'm excited for him to hopefully finally start shedding some of that heavy emotional baggage he carries around and start living again.

  30. Hmm, this latest rumor or news I don't know... The funny thing is, how accurate it already is given to known, where and when Hotch will meet the lady - who she is and that it's not case-related. After this pervaded Season 6, I personally wish (as just one of the viewers) to know more about the current emotional state of the team, beside most important seeing a case solved. My still open question is, why Hotch did not trust the team in relation to Prentiss death (which it was at the end if it really was his own decision (?) - or he got muzzled from above - then I want to know who was involved). At this point of the show, I have absolutely no interest in a little "park banter" not even for five seconds. There are so many interpersonal team aspects not adressed or declared, left open and unspoken. And the latest PR Hit is a release for a possible romance for Hotch. Seriously? So CM will show me Hotch's new love (of all the stated problems above)? Ouch! In my opinion this small story would take away alot from the show and the team and sounds to me more like a dime novel character than "CM Hotch". They can do it sure, but it can't be made properly in 1-2 minutes it would need more time to show the awakening of a new love, otherwise its just cheap. She hopefully turns out to be, a outsider/stranger which brings a inner process in him going. Questioning his motives. Which would be more plausible for me. And of course I would wish him a happier life but pls. start somewhere else not at 100.
My best guess is according to the spoiler releases this season. 1. TG and PB shoot down a romance, 2. Erica teases about romance for one this season, 3. now this detailled spoiler for Hotch
It seems to be kind of a PR strategy to spur the audience interest. That's like "to have shot one's bolt". Knowing what's gonna happen, why on earth should I tune in? There must be more behind it, or CM has "lost his mind" what was the trigger....

  31. "I do not like that some posters call people who do not like a love interest for Hotch "pathetic"."

I never said that. I said that people who are willing to jump ship from a fandom they claim to love just because Hotch is getting a love interest is pathetic. Why would you want to stop watching the show because of that? It's only going to hurt it if enough people actually feel that way.

In my opinion, they're more in love with Hotch than the show. I think they're awfully possessive of him, too. I'd like to see him happy because he deserves it. As unfortunate as it was that Haley died, he can't keep "moping" around forever. But like I said, that's just my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh, man. How do I even start responding? Um, if it had been my choice, Hotch wouldn't get a romance. I believe the only thing that couldn't be accomplished without giving Hotch a romantic interest is a story where Hotch gets a romantic interest. Hotch *can* be happy single. Hotch, through being loving and sharing the memories of the love he had and the joys of the marriage with Haley with Jack is a way to teach Jack about love.

That being said, in response to some of the objections to the story line, I have one word. Precedent. It doesn't guarantee anything, but does give an inkling of how things can be handled. Now, of course, I'm going by my assessment of things. But, I don't feel that the introduction of Kevin Lynch took over the show, changed the direction of the show, changed the focus of the show, etc, etc. Neither did the reintroduction of Will Lamontagne. So, just as far as that goes, unless there's a reason to think they'll handle this differently (and again there's always a chance, but I don't see any evidence of the likelihood) why shouldn't this story be handled as well as they've handled similar stories in the past?

I'm saying anyone has to like it. I personally believe a person can't help what they like or don't like. I just don't understand objections phrased in a way that make it seem like it's the first time the show has done anything like this. There's no clear cut divide between seasons 1-6 and season 7 because a team member is getting a romance. That divide should be between seasons 1-2 and 3-7.

Also, this keeps coming up on various sites, but when exactly did the show stop focusing on cases? We get about 20 cases each season (give or take two parters). And, each case takes up the bulk of the episode. To my view, the personal stuff is usually confined to the teaser portions and the epilogue. And, when they are part of the bulk of the episode, they still never take up more time than the case and the team working it. And I haven't seen anything in the 4 episodes of this season to make me think this season is going to change that.

Now, I'm a bit concerned about the writer for the episode where this character is introduced. Sorry, but so far the writer's track record isn't good for me and Hotch is my favorite character. And, I find the triathlon to be silly and complicated and implausible. I think a much more realistic story would be Hotch going off for a morning run and encountering her that way. I just don't buy that Hotch, with his limited time would get involved in something that involved time effort and training.

Given that I do have an idea of how the show handles romance I feel I can have a wait and see to how the show will handle this.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Where is all this potential for Emily and Hotch that people keep talking about? Chemistry? Everybody in this show has it with each other. Scenes together? Again, they are always changing the team ups. Because you want it? Well, I'm all for Hotch and JJ, but I'm a fan of this show for years and I'm aware they will steer clear for inter-team relationships. So, there's no hope and there's no point arguing about it It won't happen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I SO agree with the previous comment.
I think the Hotch/Prentiss shippers need to understand that their ship was never canon or official. No more than the other ships.
It's something that belongs in fanfiction, and it needs to stay here.

All the characters have shared wonderful moments and Hotch had had great scenes with all of them. We'll always wonder 'what if', and a lot of us like to speculate on a possible relationship between Hotch and one of his teammate. Hotch/Prentiss is just one of the many ships (there are a lot of shippers for Hotch/JJ, Hotch/Garcia, Hotch/Reid, Hotch/Rossi,....). All of them can defend their ship with proofs and evidences, and it means that the show is doing something right : we like to analyze the relationship between different characters because all their scenes are interesting and leave us to speculate.

In the end we need to understand that it'll stay in fanfiction world, and it's much better that way.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, I agree that Criminal Minds should not ship any characters and that this is for fanfiction only. Yet, I do understand shippers arguments that they do not want Hotch or Prentiss to get a romance. I am not a shipper, but I must emphasize that I am not at all happy about Hotch getting a love interest this season. I know Criminal Minds has found love interests for Garcia & JJ, but I think this is enough and the show should be focusing more on team interaction than romances. I think Hotch is one of the best & most complex characters on the show, and I am very disappointed that he is going to find a love interest. I know he might find someone in the last season of the show but to me this is way too soon. How will his character develop more if the writers give him a love interest this season? The storyline Hotch meets his love interest in a park is simple and not even that creative. Can't the writers at least think of something more creative ? I think too many shows today give characters romances. This is not very creative and to me is the downfall of most shows. I thought Criminal Minds was different than most shows on TV. Writers should explore team interaction more, Hotch's time with his son, & how he dealt with Haley's death. To me (this is just my honest opinion)I do not agree with giving Hotch a love interest yet. If the writers wanted to give Hotch a love interest why did they not give him one after he divorced Haley ? Why not give Prentiss a love interest since she never had one on the show? Why Hotch? In order for Hotch to smile more, he does not need a love interest. Some fans have indicated in the past that they do not want Reid to get a love interest since they feel that the writers can do so much more with his character story line. I feel the same way about Hotch. I respect Hotch for his work ethic and serious personality. I think Hotch can show his happiness in so many different ways. I feel that this season has lost much of the creativity of previous seasons(except for the episode Painless which was great). And, what about the latest news that in another episode Hotch meets one of his previous female students on a case? I would hope that the writers would not have Hotch dating different women. I know other fans whom I talked to are not happy about Hotch getting a love interest so soon either. I also know that some fans have indicated that maybe Hotch's love interest will be shown only a few minutes of some episodes. Yes, I agree that this is much better than a entire episode being about Hotch's romance but it is the idea of Hotch finding a romance so soon that I do not like. This will be very hard for me to do, but I may not watch the show after Hotch gets a love interest.

    ReplyDelete
  36. For those questioning "Why Hotch?" I think the simple answer is that this is the natural progression in his storyline. His entire story away from the BAU has been about family and relationships. We've seen glimpses of his home life as a single dad and how he's coping with what's happened and now it's time to move on to the next step and perhaps see him shed some of that heavy emotional baggage he's been carrying around for years. I don't agree that it's too soon. There is no time limit on grief and he's not been in any kind of relationship for four years. And while he seems to be completely devoted to his son, the man deserves and needs something for himself, some adult time that doesn't include looking at dead bodies and talking about psychos. I'm sure however it's done it'll be done tastefully and in character. I'm not worried. I think I'll probably even like it.......a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I disagree that Hotch should get a romance this season, but everyone has their opinions. I would rather the writers explore other aspects of Hotch's character first. I think Hotch can shed some emotional baggage by talking to his team members or friends about Haley's death. Why is finding love again the next step? Many people never marry again after they lose someone, and I can see Hotch feeling this way. Yes, Hotch can be happy without finding someone again. This storyline with love for Hotch is so predictable & boring. I thought the writers of Criminal Minds would come up with something else. I am very disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think some people are tripping over nothing. It said "an episode" and not multiple. Probably just going to show that Hotch is ready to try and find love again. The writers are brilliant with these relationships that have so far been written in the show so really how likely is it going to mess up the entire show? Or even any individual character with a love interest? It's a natural progression. Characters have to grow in muliple ways. Have faith and watch. Judge after the fact and not before!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I know Hotch might get a love interest someday but I do not want him to get one this season. I want the writers to explore more about Hotch's past, time with his son, & how he dealt with Haley's death. I think Hotch is a complex character & giving him a love interest to me is way to simplistic & predictable. It seems rushed that the writers want to give Hotch a love interest by episode 10 (save it for the finale of Season 7)! I would hope it did not take up too much time in the show, but it is the idea that Hotch suddenly meets a love interest in the park this season that bothers me. I wanted to see Hotch interact more with his team as well. I do not know if I can really watch episode 7.10 even if it covers one minute of Hotch's love interest. I can always watch it online if I decide to watch it someday. I do not think that I will.
