Criminal Minds Duo Shoot Down Hotch/Prentiss Romance Buzz: 'It's a Hard Line to Ride'

Criminal Minds Duo Shoot Down Hotch/Prentiss Romance Buzz: 'It's a Hard Line to Ride'

by Matt Webb Mitovich

Write about CBS’ Criminal Minds (airing Wednesdays at 9/8c) — any story about it, really — and a small sect of fans is sure to surface throwing their weight behind a someday romance between BAU agents Hotch (played by Thomas Gibson) and Prentiss (Paget Brewster).

“They have good chemistry and look great together, and she could bring out a less serious side to him,” one TVLine reader recently commented. “I want to see my Hotch have some fun.”

  1. I'm really glad that the writers are wanting to keep this show from becoming a show about "team romance". I don't mind when they show the rare specifics about a team member's "outside of work" romantic life since those situations could show an impact on their work. But really, as far as relationships are concerned, the only ones truly relevant to the show are the non-romantic interactions between team members. Anything else would cheapen the show.

  2. I wish they hadn't added in things like "we'll see" after a detailed shooting down of possibility of ship. Stick to your guns. Also, I said this on the site, but to me, the ship should never happen because Hotch is the boss. Also, in character, why it won't happen. If it ever happens, it will be because they twisted character to fit the plot. There is no way that Aaron Hotchner would get romantically involved with a subordinate. Not even taking into consideration that people do sometimes behave out of character. Some things are not in a person's character. To me, this is not part of Hotch's make up. I also don't see it in Prentiss to get involved with her boss.

But, even though I believe Hotch being the boss is the reason it wouldn't happen, regardless of how they felt, there's another thing. I've seen no indication that any feelings exist between them. Not of that nature. I've seen that they care about each other, but you can care about someone without feeling romantic/sexual about them. I've never seen them behave with each other in a way that made me think they wouldn't act that way if their feelings were strictly friendship.

  3. Please no! That would totally ruin the show.

  4. I think it's a ridiculous idea. I agree with Angelwriter - Hotch as her superior would bring up all sorts of legal questions. I don't agree that romance in the stories would cheapen the show. People to be real, have romantic relationships. But I would rather see it with someone outside the team. PS Reid needs a girlfriend. NOW.

  5. I'm a hard shipper of Hotch/Prentiss but I hate to see the show turn into a soap opera. I want the writters keep that road open as in a subtext no more, but something present. If the series will be over in the future, or one of the actors leave, yes I WANT to see them as a couple, but no screw ths team dynamics before any of that happen.

  6. Hotch and Prentiss doesn't make sense as a couple, so I'm glad about that article. I really wouldn't mind Hotch finding love outside of the team, or Prentiss finding love outside of the team, though.
And I would prefer to see other storylines for Reid than a romance. He has been left in the back burner during season five and season six, so I hope to see a more interesting storyline for Reid. I'm really hoping the story about his mother will be a real arc and an interesting one.

  7. Thank god this has been addressed. Now maybe all the H/P shippers will stop whining. Interteam relationships should stay in fanfiction where they belong.

  8. Paget and Thomas look amazing together. Their characters are professionals. The writers can manage a romance between them without turning this show into a soap opera. They can hint things here and there cleverly without shifting the focus of this show. They really can, if they want to. If it is not possible, I still would love to see more interaction between Hotch and Prentiss more in this season. It was great in season 4-5 but almost nothing in season 6. They are really good together. They don't need to date but maybe making them closer friends would work great.

  9. What bothers me is not the possibility of pairing Emily and Aaron, but the current state of their interaction with each other (I do think they look perfect together but probably it will never happen). Does anybody remember that when Hotch was stabbed by Foyet, Emily was the one who found him, stood by him in the hospital room, gave him a ride on his first day back to work etc... They had many scenes together solving the cases in the previous seasons. Suddenly they barely exchange two words to each other. That really bothers me and does not feel natural. I don't need them to be a couple if that will change the focus of the show, but please let these two work closer, like back in the old days.

  10. The fandom seems divided and will it always be... I don't care if they put Hocht/Prentiss together, as long as the show stays on topic -> solving cases. I personally wish they would bring more mixed pairings every week instead stuck with the old routine (Morgen/Emily overdone S6) Interactions btw. Prentiss/Hotch? It's a while ago. I too find it strange. Just to clarify I'm not a shipper. Are the writers insecure what they should do because a part of the fandom wishes for romance? And so simple avoid any screen time? Oh God, CM has the liberty to play the fictional characters how they want - no limitation. On the other hand the audience has the liberty to weekly turn in or not. At the moment I think, the best solution for CM could be; no romance at or outside work, going back to old patterns in regards to the team mix. Satisfies the biggest part of the audience inc. the H/P shippers (they just want to have hope) without losing the ones which are absolutly against any interteam romance.

  11. I agree, that it is a bit strange that there hasn't been any real interaction between Hotch and Emily since season 5. Many people pointed out that there wasn't even a last scene between the two before Paget left the show last season, which I found odd and disappointing, because the Hotch/ Emily relationship is as much part of the show as the Reid/Emily or Morgan/Emily relationship. As for a romantic involvement I could only see it happen if either Hotch or Emily left the BAU. I liked the Hotch / Emily relationship best the way it was at the beginning of season 5. I enjoyed the way they interacted as friends and how smoothly they worked together. I would like to see the two back like that. I also agree with Jarvis about mixing it up more. I 'm looking forward to see more of Reid/Morgan, Rossi/Emily or Rossi/Morgan in season 7. There are so many interesting inter team relationships to explore, I could totally do without any romance at all.
