  1. Awesome episode! Joe Mantegna was great! will need to rewatch this episode because there was so much going on but how could CM so brilliantly tackle race and history like it did in just 42 minutes? Bravo Janine Sherman Barrois, this was amazing writing you did!

Only false note was having Cruz there, there was no treason why he should have been there except to remind people of the secret between him and JJ. All the scenes he had, the interrogations he did with JJ could have been done by Hotch.

This episode is getting a 9 out of 10 from me!

  2. This was a very powerful episode for me. I was a young kid in the 60's with southern grandparents. The way they were and the way I was being raised was two different views. This episode struck a nerve with me on that point. Janine took a very difficult subject and weaved into a marvelous episode.

I agree with Bri; pulling Hotch out just to get Cruz into the story was the only thing I didn't like. It wasn't necessary. He's the Section Chief. He's the one that should have monitoring the interrogations, not Hotch.

Still, for the powerful storyline and the absolutely brilliant acting of Joe Mantegna, I give this one a 9.25

  3. This episode was Awesome. Joe Mantenga was superb. Janine wrote a fabulous episode that will strike a cord is so many. That said. The big drawback for me was the JJ/Cruz garbage. I don't like it. Their being on some 'assignment' two years after she's returned only makes a team of world class profilers look stupid.
He had no business being in this episode. His presence and overstepping his bounds in my point of view detracted from the episode. As Rockhotch31 said he's the Section Chief, he should have been monitoring the interrogation NOT interfering. I hope the writers and producers shift gears and change this arc before it damages the whole season.
I'd give this episode a 8 out of 10 because of that. Sorry Janine.... I just don't like new JJ and Cruz....

  4. Holy moly! Glynn Turman and Joe Mantegna were fantastic! When Charles told his story i was shocked..i felt so bad for him, it made me cry and also atm it makes me tear up when i think about it. And ofc seeing Lyle crying made me tear up aswell..I was sure that he was innocent.

Lot of great Blake and Reid scenes. Loved them. Also, JJ and Matt were great team.

And that SONG playing when Rossi walked away..it was so good. Perfect choice.

  5. Very substantial dialogue. No high pitched action, but the interrogations escalated to a level of restrained stress and stayed there. Several issues tackled and especially liked the reference to pushing through depression and mental issues and refusing to acknowledge them. The great set decoration stood out as Reid and Alex were going through Charles’s room. I liked the reference to the family not lawyer-ing up, because I think one of them would have when faced with that team. Not sure where JJ and Cruz are going, but hope it doesn’t wear thin. Aaron can interrogate me anytime.

  6. Very good episode, but as others have said, it would have been that much better with Hotch staying in on the interrogation of Lyle. He is stellar in those scenes. I didn't mind Cruz being in the episode, I just think he should have been the one watching the interrogations.

  7. This was mind blowing. The writing and acting was exemplary It's about time they actually did something with Rossi that lets Joe shine. No serious blood and gore, which is what can be done with top notch acting and directing.

  8. So far season 9 has been great! I thought this episode was really good. I too thought Joe mantegna was really good. I agree I would have preferred to see Hotch with JJ in the interrogation room. The section cheif should be overseeing everything. I enjoy the story with JJ and Cruz and I cannot wait for episode 200! I actually wanted more from JJ and Cruz. I thought the episode was so well written AND I couldn't believe they mentioned my town "Floral Park Long Island"! That was a first!! Keep it up Criminal Minds!!

  9. I was not as bothered by having Cruz in the interrogations, since his introduction earlier in the season stated that he wanted to "get his feet wet". He's clearly inexperienced, since none of the BAU would've run into the room when a suspect gets super agitated.

His super secret assignment with JJ is stupid though. *snore*
