CRIMINAL MINDS. AssignmentX interview with Matthew Gray Gubler about Season 9

By ABBIE BERNSTEIN

The special agents of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis UnitBAU – on CBSCRIMINAL MINDS have had a rough time of it lately, what with their colleague Emily Prentiss, played by Paget Brewster, going to work in England when Brewster left the series at the end of Season 7 and Assistant Director Erin Strauss (Jayne Atkinson) being tortured and murdered by the evil Replicator at the end of Season 8. However, arguably Dr. Spencer Reid, played by Matthew Gray Gubler, has had the rockiest year of all. In Season 8, it took him ages to work up the nerve to ask Dr. Maeve Donovan (Beth Reisgraf), who he'd courted over the phone, to meet him face to face. Their first date was disrupted by a stalker and Maeve was eventually murdered right in front of Reid. With help from his friends and co-workers, Reid has pulled himself together, though he may still be somewhat fragile at the beginning of Season 9, which premieres Wednesday at 9 PM.

In contrast to his character, actor Gubler seems like he couldn't be happier. The actor, who hails from Las Vegas, Nevada (as does Reid), has so far directed five episodes of CRIMINAL MINDS and reveals, “I'm doing two more this year, so seven.”

Gubler, who also works in feature films and does animation voice work – he’s Simon in the ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS movies and spoke for Jimmy Olsen in ALL-STAR SUPERMAN – is at a CBS party for the Television Critics Association. Asked if he has a moment, he grins, says, “Howdy!” and talks enthusiastically about what's happening for him professionally.

ASSIGNMENT X: Is Reid going to get any kind of a social life this season?

GUBLER: I hope so. He deserves it. He's had a hard couple of decades. The girlfriend getting shot in front of him. It's been a hard one for Reid, but hopefully he'll find some happiness.

AX: Would you have liked to see the Reid/Maeve Donovan relationship play out a little longer?

GUBLER: ...

  1. God love MGG, but why does he let hair and makeup do the things they do to his hair? Actually his hair should have had a billing of its own on 9-1 because it caused quite a stir. Do they use an egg beater or a live weasel to fix it? (No animals were harmed in the styling of this hair.) Kidding aside he is such a great character. I hope Reid meets just the right lady before the series ends.

  2. Is it my age (I'm not telling) but I think his cut looks silly- makes him look like he's modeling not profiling. Personally I liked his look best when he did the show where the cop asks Rossi
"Where did you find this kid", mid-length. His present cut makes him look far too juvenile and far too trendy.
Appearances aside, I did like him in the premiere, involved and the only guy who could have reached as far out as he did regarding the praying mantis. I find Reid and Garcia the most unique of characters, and as such need to be handled carefully, too far out makes them look silly, while playing them skillfully adds awesome value to the show. Good start for the season.

  3. MGG had his hair cut and styled while he was working on a short film during the show's hiatus. He does appear to be returning back to his roots as a NY fashion model. I do miss the earlier Reid who looked nerdy and was socially inept. He's come a long way from his introduction as possibly being borderline asperger. I don't mind the characters growing and developing, but I do like it to be in the range of believable.

  4. I agree with you Elphie... Reid was socially awkward, he was severely bullied at school, he only had his mom while growing up,... And he sound and act as a bright person and even handle computers and different pieces of technical equipment. Now he wants to have kids, he was liked in the school because of that basketball team stuff, he has an aunt, he sounds and acts immature and sometimes even dumbly, and he doesn't want an iPad because he is a technophobe. Here is another case of personality transplant (besides JJ). I like Spencer Reid, but I don't want him to become Gubler.
