Criminal Minds cast not thrilled with franchise

‘Minds’ cast not thrilled with franchise

Shemar Moore wants ‘Criminal’ spinoff to fail

In less than a month’s time, Criminal Minds will shift from being a singular crime drama to a franchise brand. Feb. 16 marks the debut of its spinoff, Suspect Behavior, and to say the original cast is less than thrilled is an understatement. In fact, they offered up some rather frank opinions on the subject to TV Guide Canada.

“I’m flattered that we’ve done such a good job that they would like to do another show, but there’s another part of me that wants it to fail,” states Shemar Moore on the show’s L.A. set. “CBS, as far as I know, has never had a failed spinoff. I’m not gonna lie, I hope this is their first. Nothing against those actors, but because if it fails [CBS will] realize that this shit ain’t easy.”

“We worked with a guest cast and they used our resources and our crew, and we worked really hard to create this thing for them (and) we kinda got shafted,” continues Paget Brewster. “And it was what we were afraid of. We were afraid that we would be cannibalised for the creation of this next show and unfortunately, that’s a little bit of what happened.”

On the flip side, Thomas Gibson notes the whole Criminal brand would look bad if any part of it didn’t succeed and Matthew Gray Gubler says he’s “very curious” to see the spinoff; however, he does point out he prefers fresh ideas to Hollywood remakes.

Regardless, Suspect Behavior was the source behind the changes to the original, which was confirmed by CBS president Nina Tassler at the recent TCAs. Though the cast appears to have welcomed new addition Rachel Nichols with open arms, Cook’s dismissal threw them for a loop and sadly, it looks like Brewster may soon be following in her footsteps. This season, the actress says her character will face a growing problem that stems from her past with a European organization, which “may or may not lead to my demise.”

Those who keep abreast of Criminal news know that Brewster’s Season 6 deal includes a pilot out, meaning she’s free to film another television show should she so choose to. While she says nothing has struck her fancy to date, it’s very possible the BAU will have another spot to fill come next fall — yet another upset to both cast members and fans alike.

“I don’t even want to cross that bridge. I really don’t,” says Gibson.

Criminal Minds airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on CTV/CBS. Suspect Behavior debuts post-Criminal

  1. So behind you Shemar & Paget!! I know I won't be watching the spin-off. Unfortunate that Criminal Minds will be opposite American Idol for most of the remainder of the season and spin-off won't. I'm sure that will hurt Criminal Minds' ratings.

Why in the world would CBS (Tassler) think that messing with the original cast of CM was a good idea. Don't they realize they can't take two fantastic women, JJ& Prentiss, and just replace them for no good reason!!?? Seaver is the perfect example. It just doesn't work!

  2. I will continue to watch Criminal Minds and NOT watch that spin off! It's stupid and makes me upset.

  3. How incredibly demoralizing to the cast and crew. Ed seems to be doing just fine with his new series and new job as the spinoff showrunner. CBS' Tassler may have been letting on that it was just as much an inside job as it was CBS interference.

  4. I love (not being sarcastic…I mean that sincerely) how Thomas & Matthew are positive but hesitant, however I agree w/ Shemar & Paget.

  5. I hate that JJ is gone...replaced by another blonde...but this one says almost nothing and does almost nothing.

    Paget is a gem.

Spin off? No way shall I watch that.

  6. I'm still very much upset CBS fired AJ and Paget. And I'm so happy that Shemar didn't came right out and said pretty much what all of Criminal Minds fans are wishing. This sucks cause we all know that CBS is doing all it can to set this show up for failure. Changing an already great cast, diminishing their budget and then scheduling them at the same time American Idol...Really? WTF! I know for sure I will continue to watch Criminal Minds, but there is no way I will watch the spin off. I didn't like that episode they did in season 5. So...no. Just no.

  7. Paget leaving would be a GREAT kick in CBS' ass. But what happens if they pick up her new pilot? Will they seek some revenge for her new show?

BTW i totally agree with Shemar and Paget. I'm praying for the spin-off's failure. There's no way in hell that i'll watch that piece of sh*t, not even if it's the last show on TV.

  8. Whatever Paget chooses to do, I'll support her all the way, but part of me will always want her to stay and be that powerful female role model because it is obvious that Seaver's "abilities" are an insult to the BAU. Though she is a cadet, she asks the most stupidest questions.

As for the spinoff, the only way you will make me watch that is if Seaver disappears from the original.

  9. I appreciate Shemar's & Paget's honesty and I hope they don't get any blowback from it. They talked about their very real concerns and were still classy about it.

I too will continue to watch the original Criminal Minds and refuse to watch the spinoff. Not that I have any faith that CBS will get the message that they messed up royally with their recent decisions.

And I will support Paget and the rest of the real* CM cast in whatever they choose to do career-wise.

*Gibson, Brewster, Gubler, Moore, Vangsness, Mantegna, and AJ Cook. Nothing personal against Rachelle Nichols but I couldn't care less about her character.

  10. They work too hard! I love Criminal Minds and will continue to watch it, as for this "Spin-off" shit, I'm not for it. One of the reasons I watch the show is because I love the cast and the bond they have on the show as well as real life. Messing around with the cast doesn't make me happy.

I still haven't recovered from JJ leaving, now Prentiss?

Also, if Garcia leaves, I am no longer watching the show. It wouldn't be Criminal Minds without her.

  11. CBS is the acronym for Cannot Be Smart

  12. I'd like to think that if Paget leaves CBS will take the opportunity to as AJ Cook back. I know this is highly unlikely, but a fan can hope!

  13. The cast of Criminal Minds could never successfully be duplicated. How is it even plausible that CBS would think that a spin off would ever be a good idea? I never thought that I would ever be offended or insulted about a spin off or discussion of removing a character from a television show but I certainly am.

    CBS, leave well enough alone!

To each and every Criminal Minds cast member, we adore you it's YOU that makes the show what it is.

    Criminal Minds is #1!

  14. The only reason I can think of that CBS is making all these changes is because, for some retarded reason, they want to cancel CM but don't have the balls to actually follow through. So instead, they set the show up for failure so they don't actually have to take responsibility for cancelling the show. It will be sad to see the demise of CM. I saw the would be spin-off show last season - it sucked balls. The cast of the spin off is awfully written and poorly acted.

  15. I agree! They are ruining the original for something newer. I cannot say I will be watching the new show. I would much rather see the Original stay on. Why mess with a good thing? You know in other words, I fit ain't broke don't fix it"

  16. J.J. was the "normal" center of the show, the one without quirks and issues, who kept the BAU's collection of damaged personalities on an even keel. Who else could have made Hotch smile, brought Spencer out of his shell, pushed Penelope toward an appropriate and fulfilling romance, empathized with Morgan, talked biological clock fears with Emily, and held her own in a disagreement with Dave? It was a big mistake to write her off.

  17. WHERE IS MY ''FAMILY'' OF THE REAL CRIMINAL MINDS?????
THE NEW SPIN OFF WAS A FAILURE!!!!!!!!!!!!I WAS TOTALLY SHOCKED!!!!!!!!!
THE NEW ACTORS DO NOT FIT IN.........WITHAKER IS GOOD IN MOVIES BUT NO ON TV SERIES.......AND ALL THE OTHERS DON'T HAVE THE PERSONALITY OF THE ORIGINAL CAST..
PLEASE !!!!!!!!!GIVE US BACK ..HOTCH, MORGAN, PRENTISS, THE GREAT DR. REID, ROSSI AND GARCIA..THE NEW BLONDE GIRL IS NOT GOOD...WHY J.J.LEFT??

  18. it is called "jumping the shark"--making some absurd change that ushers in the end. i often hate the plots and creepy action, but i watch for the cast.

  19. The "Suspect Behavior" spinoff is terrible. The actors speak like they are reading their lines without knowing what anyone else has said. There is zero chemistry in the cast. If they dumped Cook and Brewster to fund the new show, CBS made a HUGE mistake. The spinoff just highlights how good the cast of the original CM is.

  20. bring back emily and jj!!!!!

  21. J.J. is back!!! Now it seems that Hotch and Morgan haven't said "yes" to a new contract?? Why all this "drama"... just sign the papers and get on with the show, ok!!!
