  1. This was one of the WORST episodes ever of the whole series... and sadly my friends that includes 25 to life...

    1. Disagree, 25 to life had NO Hotch, at least he was in this one for maybe 1 minute?

but yes one of the worse. so much was wrong with it. Where do I start?

      - Too much unsub. Will not say more because I feel like a broken record.

      - why have profilers give a profile and explain to us WHY the unsub does what he did AFTER we saw the unsub kill people and why he did it? You know writers we are not that stupid, we do get it the first time, no need for repeating what we ALREADY know. You want to tell us about the unsubs then write about the TEAM!

      - again Hotch and Reid did a magic trick and dissapeared!

sadly after the first 30 minutes, CM had lost my interest and I changed channel. which was the only time I have ever this while watching a CM episode since I started watching at the start of season 3.

only good thing I can say is I liked the scene with Kate and her husband.

That is all for me. Not even rating this one.

Too bad we have to wait until March 4 for a new CM, would have love to forget this one as fast as I could.

    2. I don't watch 25 to Life because of no Hotch what so ever..... BUT I have seen it... and as bad as that episode was besides TG not being in it THIS one to me was even worse. TPTB should be ashamed to put this on the air.

  2. Wow, even when the episode is about Kate, they still have to drag JJ into the action at the end. So annoying. But what I LOVED about the episode was JLH(Kate). I think she was written well.

  3. Too much unsub, too much victim, how the heck did they come up with that profile with the 'little' profiling they did... Hotch/Rossi/Reid disappeared AGAIN in a Kim episode. This was complete drivel!

    1. How can CM go from such a great episode like 'Nelson's Sparrow' to 'Scream'? Everything we loved about the KV and EM episode was evacuated from KH episode. It just amazing how the show can swing from excellent to bad in such a short time.

    2. criminal minds round the table, speak for yourself and for few people, don't Say WE, because most fans love garcia: when she is perky, funny, witty, profesional serious, she is a great character, agree to the fact that i myself would like to see her doing something else that being in a sometimes nervous break looking info so fast...without adding much tension like in previos seasons....she is fabulous and i you prefere a jack in office character, it's not what we love about this character for years

    3. Carrol,

where did you get that I was speaking for everyone and that I didn't like Garcia???? my post was NOT about Garcia at all but about CM writing and how well Kirsten and Erica did with Nelson's Sparrow.

From your post , I would presume English is not your first language, so just reread my post and know it wasn't about Garcia :)

I know MANY loves Garcia, I do too. I like when she goes off with the team for the right reasons but mostly her job is to support the team when it comes to find information about unsubs.

    4. have to add this: CMRT is a blog ABOUT Criminal Minds made by FANS. We as fans speak for ourselves. Like everyone else we have opinions and we decided to create a blog and post about CM and what we think of it, without malice and with respect AND honesty. If we like and episode we say so, if we do not we say so.

The threads here are opened to all to posts what they think of the episodes, if we wanted only OUR opinions to matter no one would be allowed to post here.

    5. since the threads here are opened to all posts, let me say something: i barely see Garcia this season

  4. I don't know... I don't know.... These writer's meet to discuss storylines... HOW does no one say this is 'bad'... Sadly, Erica, writer's, director and CBS should be ashamed for putting this episode on the air. And to give Kim THREE episodes to write badly????? Just beyond comprehension.

  5. This was definitely one of the weaker episodes of the season, most likely because Kim wrote it.... I hate to criticize the writers behind my favourite show but Kim is declining exponentially and needs to go. The only thing that saved this episode for me was the creepiness and the superior directing of Hanelle Culpepper. She won an award for last year's 9-19 "The Edge of Winter." That episode gave us the awesome scene of Reid yelling "FBI!!!" and slamming the cuffs on that Colby guy. This episode wasn't as good, though.

I can't believe Kim wrote "The Wheels on the Bus...," "The Gathering," "The Return," and "Mr. and Mrs. Anderson," with "The Return" being by far the best of the lot but now it is as if she cannot write to save her life. Please, bring back Mirren or Mundy and give her the boot; I'm sure she'll be much more useful on a less cerebral show. Nevertheless, good acting by JLH, creepy unsub story, and good directing by Hanelle. I was entertained... And CMRT, I agree; this show can go from 1 to 100 in a blink...

  6. It's pretty bad when my husband is laughing at me because I am rooting for the unsub to kick JJ's arse.
"Kick her ass, go on kick her ass!"

Other than that I didn't hate the episode as much as everyone else seems to have. I loved the opener with Kate, it gave me a chuckle.

    1. I agree about the first scene with Kate lol this was a decent episode nonetheless, compare it to the others this season and its not, but as its own entity it was entertaining.

    2. I was thinking the same thing with JJ and the unsub, is that bad? Lmao

    3. the best scenes : the last ones with the teenagers girls, suspens: who is after them, the worst the heavy make up of JLH' eyes make up, some people didn't like garcia's kitten hears, i hate JLH eyes's make up, it get distracting too

  7. Glad this is the last episode of hers we have to see this season. Next is Big-Dog Virgil Williams with Thomas directing so it can only get better from here.

  8. Ok, so the lead in lasted too long. For a moment I was hoping we weren't going to see the unsub's face but we did before the opening credits. Way too much torture porn.
Nurses and school teachers are people who could disappear for days without being noticed? What? I call BS.
The psychological evaluation was contradictory and just didn't ring true. He wants to protect them, but he hurts them?
Again, JJ had the key insights and then participated in the takedown. And of course Kate had to be the one to shoot the guy. Where were the rest of the team? Why didn't JJ call out to them? Why was JJ down there by herself? They should have been searching in pairs and the minute she was attacked she should have called out to the team. Oh, but wait, she's Superwoman and doesn't need to call for help because that would make her weak. *sigh*
The boy recorded his mother's murder and nobody ever once noticed he was carrying the casette player and listened to it? BS. Oh wait, they noticed he was carrying it, but nobody bothered to listen to it even though the cop had told him to try to record the abuse. I still say BS. They would have taken it and either made copies or put the original tape in evidence.
He listens to this thing all the time yet he conveniently had the tape out of the player during the fire.
The unsub is meticulous about washing just about everything except the apron-- which looks like it lets blood through. Why didn't he have a line of aprons like he did shirts? Also, blood turns brown after awhile, so it would not stay red. it just looked fake.
He's upset that his victims aren't following the dialog correctly. His mother said "put down the knife" so why doesn't he brandish a knife? Did he tell them what to say? It wasn't clear. Why would he leave that part out?
The "scream for me" bit was just over the top.
I like Kate's husband, but Meg seems like a total brat. If the "hot guy" didn't show up because of a "babysitter" that should be a red flag. It's annoying me that this girl is so stupid. Plus, she's not that great of an actress.
The male cast took a backseat to the girls this week. I'm ok with Kate getting some screentime since she's a new addition and has barely been used, but Hotch was woefully underused.
I did like how Reid went toward the map, but he didn't get to contribute too much.
I did like that they brought the old cop in and I thought there were some good actors.
I liked the little smirk from Morgan when Reid mentioned chess tournaments as a place where singles could meet.
I thought the actor playing the unsub did a good job with what he was given, but I don't think his character was really all that fleshed out or believable from the writing front.
I liked the music he was listening to at the beginning though.
    This episode was just mediocre.

    1. I agree with most of what you said: all of the male characters were sidelined for JJ again, but it did make sense for Kate since we don't know much about her. Kate's niece and her friend are just plain stupid; and Reid's chess tournament comment made me laugh; little to no Hotch. Fir me the episode wasn't the worst, but it wasn't good.

  9. As a diehard CM fan, I try to find some redeeming quality to a bad episode. Sadly, this episode didn't even have that. OK, I like the scene with Kate, Chris and Meg. That's it.

This was horrible. And with apologies to severeCMaddict, I my world Hanelle Culpepper is a horrible director. Her crotch shot of the unsub at the beginning proved that.

If CM gets renewed for S11, Kim Harrison had GOT TO GO!

Rockie's grade: F as in total failure.

    1. Okay, Rockie you do have a point about the crotch shot lol but as for the rest of the episode ill agree to disagree about the directing (I think she directed the hell out of "The Edge of Winter.") The writing, however, ...I agree that Kim must go. I try to find redeeming qualities to every episode as well but when Kim writes it becomes harder and harder. Bring back Mundy, or Mirren, or Dworkin & Beattie, or (wishful thinking) Andrew Wilder!

      Delete
    2. Thank you for respecting my opinion. Like you said, we'll just agree to disagree. :) Out of respect for yours, I'm gonna sit down this weekend and re-watch "The Edge of Winter".

However SCMA, please don't get my heart going with the thought of Wilder returning to this show. *reaches for heart meds* ;) If he did, and let me up the game, as show runner, CM could go many more seasons.

And there would be less doubt about TG signing on for another two years. As in, IMHO, very little to none.

Ohhhhh to have wishful thinking thoughts..............

      Thank you for that SCMA!

  12. Oh dear. What a waste of a Criminal Minds episode. Someone needs to fire Kim Harrison. I would give it 2/10 - one point because I quite liked Kate in this and one because Reid looked absolutely gorgeous. But it was tedious, predictable, far, far too unsub heavy and yet again we had JJ in at the takedown and JJ giving her pearls of wisdom about motherhood - is that written down somewhere as a rule for the writers? What a Fail.

    2. motherhood ,momies kicking badd ass: JJ and Kate not jus JJ

      Delete
    3. Do not mind the Mommy thing. Yes Kate and JJ are mother's makes sense they will talk about this and be the one to deal with distraught mothers. But why just them? As a father Hotch could also relate to parents losing a child. As human being, Reid, Morgan, Dave and Garcia also can related to losing a child too.

The badass thing is getting annoying. JJ is not the only one who can be badass. they ALL have had training in self defense, they can all shoot guns so why is she ALWAYS the one in all the take down of the unsubs? This is annoying and so predictable now.

      Delete
    4. Exactly CMRT! JJ is always doing unsub take downs and parental advice, so predictable and I am so over it.

  13. And, of course, we were treated to SuperNinja JJ taking down the big bad man with very little effort, and I had been hoping that TPTB and EM were listening to the viewers and were toning her down a little. I guess I was wrong.

I agree with most everyone else that the show went from some very good episodes to a very s****y episode. I definitely won't be watching this one again, nor will I save it on my DVR.

And, last but not least, why show the unsub at the very beginning of the episode???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. FWIW JJ didn't take down the unsub but rather got her ass kicked by him. I get the feeling this was a conscious decision to help tone down her "ninja-y" nature, but this just seems to be the wrong way to do it. It also creates a continuity problem cause we've seen her beat up guys a lot bigger than this unsub. Of course, continuity doesn't really exist in this new CM.

    2. I obviously wasn't watching very closely if I missed that...lol. Well, I wasn't watching very closely because it wasn't that interesting to me. But, I persevered and watched the rest of the show, but I honestly couldn't tell you what it was about, and usually, I can quote you chapter and verse about each episode. Not a good episode.

  14. I thought it was an awesome episode with a great message about domestic abuse and also be careful of meeting people online. We must be due for a Hotch Episode soon :-) Gosh I love this Show

  15. I'm disgusted that this episode was one of the two to be shown in February sweeps. It was so boring, I almost turned it off. I just watched again because I wanted to be sure it was as bad as I thought it was.

    It was.

I believe at times it's easy for someone like me to criticize a writer on a show like this, they do, after all, put themselves out there to be trashed or lionized. But when a writer is so consistently bad, and seemingly getting worse, I have to say that i think it's because she's not very good. There was no balance in this episode, no grace in the profiling, no reason for the entire enterprise. They've done single imprint cases before, much better. And they just had to add the mommy conversation into the mix. What is with these people and the everloving uber-mommy?

    1. CM was third in the ratings for their timeslot last night, not great but sometime more telling, CM lost viewers at the half hour. Usually CM doesn't lose viewers at the half hour. I guess some decided this was not very good and changed channel.

      Delete
    2. Wow, that is telling. I was tempted to turn it off myself. This has got to stop, or no one will tune in eventually. But CM keeps crowing about their popularity and spinning whatever numbers there be, so, I don't look for it to change.

      Delete
    3. About ratings:

To be fair, the big reason why the ratings are down is not just because of some weaker episodes but also because of 1) bigger competitions in the timeslot. This season CM got to face not only Modern Family but the very hot Empire on FOX. Even Modern Family is down this season. MF season premier ratings in L+SD was a 3.9 and 11.38m this wednesday it was a 3.3 and 9.77m. 2) DVR is again up in usage same for watching via the web.

To compare with a show that is a bit in the same situation as CM( a show now facing bigger competitions), The Blacklist had a 3.4 and 12.34m with its season starter. Despite having a huge audience after football 8.4 and 25.74m it was moved to Thursday last week and it got a 2.4 and 10.11m and this week, 1.7 and 8m. The competitions at 9pm on Thursday is much more fierce then on Monday at 10pm.

We can look at at what other CBS shows do at 9pm, this week NCIS:NO had a 2.3 and 16.9m but its competitions where all under 1.5 and 5m viewers. Scorpion had a 2.3 and 11.86m viewers but like NCIS:NO it faced competitions that at best had a 1.4 and under 5m. I am sure if CM was on Monday or Tuesday it would do as good as those shows.

I doubt any other shows on CBS, except for The Big Bang theory, would do any better than CM against the ABC and FOX shows.

So even if we are unhappy with the quality of this episode, the impact on the ratings is less then the competitions.

and in these days we really have to wait until the L+7 days viewing ratings to come out before really knowing how CM really did.

      Delete
    4. Thanks for posting this breakdown. I don't think it can be overemphasized how much of a beast Empire is, particularly in the demo. It's actually breaking records for a rise in viewership each week for the first 5 episodes of a series. I think the L+7 is more important than ever for CM with this competition. It may be the most competitive time slot of the week.

  16. I've watched this episode a few more times and I must say, its not as bad as I thought it was originally. This episode is more of a bridging than a disappointment. The writing, while not exactly triumphant, was (comparably) refreshingly cerebral ..now this is just my opinion lol please don't hurt me :p but with what was given I think the actors did a great job. I agree with HC, I cant find a flaw with the directing, and there was definitely a satisfactory amount of Hotch in it, considering he was probably getting ready for the presumably awesome 1016 "Lockdown," which he is directing.

Hanelle Culpepper is an amazing director, just like "The Edge of Winter," this episode had that same eerie, creepiness to it. Can't wait for 1017 "Breath Play." Not the best of the season, but definitely not the worst. Im very interested to see how this ongoing story will play out... I'm guessing that the finale will be the culmination of both, the creepy online domestic trafficking ring from "X" and of this pedophile stalking Meg. With Jim Clemente behind the finale, I'm excited.

    1. I loved 'The Edge of winter' great writing, acting and directing. Agreed with you, Culpepper is very good.

I have yet to be dissapointed by a Jim Clemente episode so hopefully the season final will be great.

    2. from Kim i like the wheel on the bus, was creepy....

    3. 'Into the woods' from Kim was VERY good and creepy and she did this without focusing much on the unsub. The part with the kids was so creepy and well done. We had great team work and profiling.

      Delete
    4. Into the Woods is the only episode of Kim's that I liked - she is racking up a long list of sub standard episodes and it is feeling like that one was a bit of a fluke.

      Delete
    5. I agree, Mary, Into the Woods was good. It was a tough subject that could have been gratuitously handled, but it was not sensationalized, it was truly scary. It was her first solo episode, so I wonder how much "help" she may have had, because I do know from that point on, hers have been some of the worst, and one, "Hope" is arguably the worst, at least of its season, maybe of the series.

      Delete
    6. I like Hope a lot, it's creepy and touching, one of the best of Kim,

    7. my favorite of Kim's episodes :the wheels on the bus

  17. Personally, I think 908 "The Return" was a showcase of superior writing on the part of Kim Harrison; she knocked it out of the park. If she writes more episodes like that then I'll be happy... and I agree with whoever said 808 "The Wheels on the Bus..." was awesome as well. I also enjoyed 915 "Mr. and Mrs. Anderson." But yeah the CM staff has some damn good writers and being the worst writer of the bunch doesn't mean she's a bad writer.... she tries lol and kudos to her for that.

    Replies
    1. My Goodness, it just goes to show how people rate different things! I recall how terrible I thought The Wheels on the Bus and Mr & Mrs Anderson were and Hope was pretty darn hopeless. But I couldn't even remember The Return so I just called it up and watched it again. And there was a good reason I couldn't recall it - I thought it was very, very poor. The idea could have been interesting but the writing was abysmal. And the Morgan.Savannah sub story has been one big yawn. No, I still maintain that, for me at least, the only episode KH has written that is up to par is Into the Woods and this latest episode has just reinforced that view. , But we all have different opinions which is what makes this board interesting.

  18. Mary totally disagree with you., i enjoyed those episodes, all of them But agree: i don't like Morgan and savannah as a romantic couple

  19. Add me to the list of folks who disliked this episode. Kim is a very weak writer. If only CM would put some money into hiring better writers, like some of the early writers that are no longer there. Pretty much everything has been said by others here. I was screaming at the TV when JJ went in ALONE to face the unsub. I'm so tired of stupid stuff like this. It reminds me of that Geico commercial with the teens out on a dark and spooky night and instead of running to the car with the lights on and engine running to get get away, they run into the barn with all the saws and machetes hanging there and the creepy masked killer awaiting them. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I hate how bad the writing has been the past several seasons (even the previous 2 episodes, while good compared to the rest of the season, are far beneath the standard set in the first 4 seasons of CM), but what annoys the heck out of me is how stupid the writers must think we viewers are. They think we can't see these obvious flaws in their writing. And why can't THEY see them?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I totally agree with you! And yet there are plenty of people out there who seem to be able to overlook the obvious flaws and shoddy writing and enjoy the episodes very much! It's incomprehensible to me - I guess it's just where each person sets their personal standard and expectations for CM. As I have watched from the start my expectations are based on the early seasons so recent seasons have been largely disappointing for me.
