This thread is open for you all to post comments and talk about tonight's new
CRIMINAL MINDS episode, titled
'Boxed In', directed by
Thomas Gibson and written by
Virgil Williams.
Hope you've enjoyed today's episode, and remember that next week we'll have a brand new one!
This episode was fantastic.... Great Team balance, not too much unsub, Great personal moments.... Very Very well rounded...
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said except about the great team balance. Once again I felt like JJ was being shoved down my throat. Just like she was in last week's episode and it'll probably be the same with next week's episode. It's the season of JJ all over again.
DeleteDebra, In seasons past JJ was Hotch's touchstone. They clicked they had amazing scenes together.. and I felt like that was given back tonight a little... I didn't mind her at all... She wasn't over the top, super agent that many don't like... she was at least for me, JJ of old....
DeleteI just can't hate a character every week because of something from the past... I judge each episode as it airs..
And I might have very well been able to enjoy JJ in those scenes with Hotch, if it weren't for the fact that I've gotten beyond fed up with her due to the excessive amount she has been used since she returned to the show.
DeleteDebra, In defense of JJ. One of the truisms in writing is if you have a weak script, you put as much face time on the popular characters as possible. This has been the crux of the problem with CM for about 3 years. They hit a plateau with the writers having new ideas. On the average, they need to have 20 to 22 story lines per year --- times 10 years. No one, not even Norman Vincent Peale when he was alive, thinks up things that far into the future. Am I calling for new writers? Not yet. But in defense of individual characters, they can only be as good as the script they're given. I understand your frustration with character assignment, but the writers are only responding to the demographics the polling is giving them. It's not the characters fault. if you must blame someone, blame the writers for their lack of vision, not the characters. It's not fair. RF
DeleteGreat show tonight
ReplyDeleteCan someone please tell me what the song at the end of the episode was. It was pretty and I want to hear it again.
ReplyDeleteI have one question. How can a parent do this to a child? Why can they be parents and other can't have kids?
ReplyDeleteAs a parent myself I can't answer you Elizabeth... BUT I can say that I enjoyed the dark and light of parenthood depicted in this episode.
DeleteWell yes it was a great episode and I enjoyed it I was just wondering what could make a parent do that to a child.
Deleteit is hard to understand. Sometime they are just doing to their kids what was done to them, they think this is how you raise kids because they were raise like that. Others have no empathy not even for their kids.
DeleteI know this show has to do with parents, and what God awful things they do to their own flesh and blood. But one of the underlying messages is this. Children, all children, are the future of the world. We as parents, are the caretakers of the future. Responsible for not only who they become, but how the children will end up treating their children. If we have a person, who has access to our children, not only parents, but step parents, friends, casual acquaintances, etc. We must be as vigilant, and protective, as possible regarding their behavior in the presence of our children. All it takes is a phrase, a sentence, an inappropriate laugh, or physical contact, to damage the child. This happened in my life many years ago. It was consistent, demeaning, and done out of shear petulance. And after 13 years, the bad stuff was easier to believe. It took decades to recover. Some of the rants I've gone on in this blog are an indirect result of what happened so long ago. My custodial parent was there, but didn't, or refused to see the signs. One of the closing statements of CM went something like this; " The silence of inaction makes cowards of us all." Please forgive my butchering of the prolog statement. I'm still numb from the show. Please watch for the signs, your children might not tell you directly, but the behavior will be there.
DeleteI found this show to be particularly well done. I can't grade it in relationship with other shows. But this one was one of the best I've seen. RF
Just waiting for the next episode LOVE Criminal Minds one of my favorite shows. And hey are they going to make a better story line for Morgan and Garcia? I'd love to watch that.
ReplyDeleteI hope that everyone who dislikes JJ realizes that there will be a few storylines JJ-centered this season. Just as everyone else gets their time in the spotlight. People can't judge everyone based on a storyline dedicated to each character.
ReplyDeleteI really didn't see the enormous amount of screen time that the JJ haters complain about this particular episode.I believe at this point they wished she was just in the background for a 5 second shot in the entire 42 minutes episode.Nothing short of that will make them happy. I'm still wondering if it was Reid instead of JJ in this situation, would they really still be complaining? A Morgan fan might note he was barely in the episode but do you hear them complaining about that? No, they only notice when Reid or Hotch or Rossi are barely in an episode.
DeleteI loved the episode, it was well done, Thomas Gibson's son looks a lot like him, Cade Owens actually did a good job at acting for the first time since season 6 the case was sad but well thought.Keep it up Criminal Minds!

DeleteI agree. I personally love JJ, but I think what happens is that once you don't like something, it really sticks out to you and you'll notice no matter how little it is. I think JJ has been toned down a lot - although I didn't really see what was so wrong with her character before. But I do understand that if there's something you don't like, it's really hard to ignore.
DeleteI loved this episode! Great team moments, wonderful directing by Thomas, intriguing case.
I can't wait for more!
Kayla--you said "Just as everyone else gets their time in the spotlight"
DeleteWell I wish that were true, Reid, Blake, Hotch, and Rossi were literally shoved to the background last season and for most of the season only JJ (and Morgan) had time in the spotlight. I think Reid had NOT ONE episode about just him in season9 either. It isn't fair for JJ to be focused on 85% of the time when there are six, yes SIX other (and more interesting I might add) characters on the show. It is supposed to be Criminal Minds, not "JJ's Criminal Minds", which is really what they should rename season 9. It isn't only about screentime, JJ apparently does everything now! sarcasm :/
And yes, when you don't like something it REALLY sticks out and bothers me no matter how little it is. So when JJ is in every single scene from beginning to end in every single episode is VERY annoying especially when the other characters are barely used and just DISAPPEAR halfway through the episodes. So I know I won't enjoy JJ-centered eppy's, so I will have to skip those, and hope the other characters get some focus this season. And yes I like Reid, but he has been getting nothing for several seasons now and I literally miss him because when I watch, I blink and poof! Where did he go??
Loved the episode. Very good writing. The case was solid, nothing like a missing kid to makes the viewers root for the team to get there in time to save the kid, which the team did!
ReplyDeleteGreat scene with the fake killer in prison, the actor played the 'I'm a creep' factor to the max! great job!
The scene with Madame Bouvier was a total Hoot! and agree with Madame 'Mmm, G-man...' indeed!
Loved that we saw the unsub only near the end so there was mystery to who he was and we all learn about him from the team working the case.
All the characters were well used, well not much Morgan and Reid but what we had was good, love how 'cheerfull' Morgan was at sending the creep back in general population! And I like the scene with Reid at the scene where the kid was taken and as one of my friend said, who is a BIG Reid fan, he look damn hot tonight! :D
Very fun scene with Hotch telling Jack in Darth Vader's voice 'Jack, I'm your father' yes Hotch can be funny at times :) Was great to have Jack and Jessica back for an episode. Cade is growing up so fast!
Hotch was great in this episode, he was in charge the whole time, knew when to let JJ and Rossi take over and when he had to step in. Speaking of JJ, she was great in this episode. We had the nice, caring JJ of earlier seasons. She was not the super agent that gets annoying at times. AJ did a great job in this episode. So did Joe, loved his scene, he is such a good actor, wish we had more scenes with him and Thomas and AJ, they work well together.
Was fun to see TG's son Travis playing the best friend of the missing kid. he was good at it. Speaking of TG always love his directing, he is very good with actors, the scene with the mother were great.
Last scene at home was good, love when we see the tender side of Hotch and it always comes out when he is with his son.
Have to mention the music in this episode, it was pretty good will try to find it and buy it.
Last, have to say bravo to Virgil Williams, great writing! Him and TG makes a great pair, they work well together and tonight was excellent, happy to see they will work again together in episode 10.16!
I will give this episode a 9.7 out of a 10
One of the song that was featured tonight was 'What have I done' by Tapsempire https://twitter.com/tapsempire
ReplyDeleteWhat Have I Done (Criminal Minds Version) Lyrics by Taps
ReplyDeleteI still remember lying on the floor
I still remember trying figure this all out
My body bruised, you slammin' down the door
So many questions, running through my headSaying what have I, what have I, what have I done
Will you stay here with me
Cause I don't wanna be alone, be alone, I don't wanna be alone
No, No
Don't leave me here on my own
I don't wanna be aloneI still remember crying all the time
I still remember so many sleepless nights
Trapped in this dark and grime
Don't turn out all the lights
My mind won't go to sleep
It keeps crying outWhat have I, what have I done
Will you stay here with meI don't wanna be alone
I don't wanna be alone

DeleteThanks, loved this song.
DeleteMy apologies for being late. I had to watch this episode again. "Boxed In".... how I love thee; let me count the ways.
ReplyDelete* Two of the opening first scenes back to back. Hotch with Madame Bouvier was a MasterCard priceless moment. All of us Hotch fans, let us giggle once more. "mmmmm-MMM G-man." And then it's followed with Hotch doing his Lord Vader voice, enjoying his surprise with his son. As the CMRT reviewer pointed out, it's wonderful to see the father side of Hotch, smiling at his surprise for his son. And yes!! Cade is growing up too fast.
* A scene with Hotch and Rossi bouncing ideas off each other. And then another classic David Rossi line. "They say the darnest things."
* The scene in the prison with Morgan and Callahan interviewing the prisoner. Another great line, delivered by Callahan. "Garden variety wack job."
* We saw the unsub and yet we didn't.
* The scene with Hotch and JJ talking about how their son's were dressing for Halloween. I like to think the BAU team is like any other; team members will talk about this kind of thing with each other. Dealing with the cases the BAU handles, it totally fit for a little team "down time".
* Reid, once again, reciting a playback of a conversation. Like he did in "100", it started to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
* Excuse my Hotch/Rossi fangirl. But the shot of them working together to uncover the car and Hotch telling Dave to back it up was special for me.
* The wonderful shot at the end of Hotch looking out the jet window to see sunlight dawning on their new day and the small smile on his face with a case closed and a child safe. Great directing!! Oh wait.......TG called that. :)
This one ranks right up there for me along with "A Thousand Suns". I must admit, if I hadn't read the two interviews with TG here, I would have missed the "good parent vs. bad parent" aspect of this episode. And bless you Virgil Williams for remembering that Rossi is a parent as well and included him in that "mix" of good parents.
As usual, Virgil "Big Dog" Williams is Rockie's star pupil. TG's directing brought Big Dog's script alive. A+
RockHotch; Where do you get to watch the shows again?
DeleteRockie's old, reliable (just like me :) ) VCR. However RTF, after the episode airs on the West Coat in the US, CBS usually puts it online at their website. That's where I watch it with my headphones when I do my reviews.
ReplyDeleteHope that helps. :D
RockHotch; Thanks for the info. I to am a person who was dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century! I'll have to dig out the VCR and see if it still works.
ReplyDeleteI'm finally doing this right. *looks over shoulder at CMRT knights coming for me* LOL
DeleteAARP'ers unite!! LOL
Very nice to have a case that was different and not about a serial killer. The actress playing the mother of the unsub was great - as were all of the guest cast. I can see how the Hotch fans adore this one - for me I was a bit peeved to lose Morgan, Reid and Kate completely about half way through and the second half was entirely Hotch, Rossi and JJ. Nice to see more Rossi but it's true there was a lot of JJ yet again.I don't know why they do this - I am left wondering where the other half of the team were and why they weren't in at the end in any way, But that's me - I love a team based episode and we rarely get them. I enjoyed it although there wasn't much suspense and the unsub just fell into their laps but I guess that's what happens in real life. For me, it's just a B because of losing half the team half way through.
ReplyDeleteGreat episode!
ReplyDeleteI kind of miss JJ being the team's liaison. You know.. I've probably said it before, but I miss old school-criminal minds. Jeez, I loved that show when it was young, you got to spend time with the team. Is it just me, or do we not see as much team as we used to in the earlier seasons? Aaaaanyyywhoo, I think the way they found out that the pedofile wasn't really the abductor seemed a little hasty and unrealistic. And where did Morgan, Kate and Reid go? But all in all I really enjoyed watching, as I always do! Cant wait until next episode :)
I loved the episode except the end. JJ up the wazooo again. Why couldn't they have given some of that time to Kate or Reid?
ReplyDeleteI continue to be frustrated with the amount of screentime JJ gets. It makes no sense to me, someone mentioned above that people only notice when Reid and Hotch get less screentime, but that is not true. Half of the team COMPLETELY disappeared for the second half of the episode and that is just plain unfair. I am not a big Morgan fan and even I was like "Where is Morgan?" by the end of the episode. You cant just cut out half of the team halfway through the episode. And here we go again with the most uninteresting character I have ever seen in LITERALLY every scene, Why? Why does JJ merit more screentime than the rest? I find the way the writers are trying to shove JJ down our throats unbearable. I didn't say she should stand in the background and do nothing the whole episode (remember: that doing nothing is specifically saved for Reid, Blake, Hotch and Rossi), but JJ cannot possibly be in every interview, interrogation, takedown and everything.
ReplyDeleteI rate this episode 6.5 out of 10 and only because of Hotch, and the story was actually interesting, but points are deducted for the disappearance of Morgan, Kate and Reid(yet again). This "All hail JJ" thing has got to end and I actually would like to see more of Kate since she has barely been around for the last two episodes.
As a Hotch fan, I loved the amount of Hotch we got in this episode, especially the scene with Madame Bouvier and the one with Hotch doing Darth Vader. I liked that the case wasn't gory, gross or excessively violent. I think the guest cast did well, even Thomas' son. Enjoyed seeing Pamela Reed. Good interaction between Rossi and Hotch. Enjoyed Reid's scene recalling the conversation.
ReplyDeleteSo, even though I enjoyed getting a good amount of my favorite character, I can totally understand those who are peeved at not seeing much of theirs. And I totally understand those who are not happy with the glut of JJ. Honestly, she is everywhere. I am sure that if she were just featured once in awhile, no one would mind, but seriously since the end of season 7 it's been ridiculous how prominent she is in most episodes. And it's even worse when other characters rarely get any significant screen time. Reid, Hotch and Rossi were practically nonexistent last year. It was the JJ/Morgan/Garcia show. I would love to see more balanced screen time for all characters. I can understand that once in awhile an episode will center on a particular team member, but to learn that JJ is going to have 2 such episodes this season and then to have her so prominent in episodes that are not about her is just too much. When you have a situation like Boxed In where several team members seem to disappear before the episode is half over, it's frustrating. So while overall I enjoyed this episode, I completely understand the concerns of those who didn't.
I guess I would overall give this a rating of 7/10, maybe a 6 if I am stingy. The biggest issue I have with this episode (unfortunately it is the central plot point) is the unsub's motivation. He was rejected by his fiancee, so he turned his rage on little boys that reminded him of himself? Yeah, sorry Virgil, I'm not buying it. I would buy it more if he was targeting women, particularly surrogates for Sharlene, since her rejection seemed to be the trigger for his devolution. That seems to be a more straightforward connection, not this regression gobbledygook. I could even buy him targeting surrogates for his mother who killed his dad, or even surrogates for his dad if I was being super generous. But surrogates for himself? I'm sorry, but that just doesn't track at all in my mind, unless I am missing something huge. It’s like Virgil had some idea of what he wanted the unsub to do, but he couldn’t come up with a realistic trigger or reason for doing it. It couldn’t be because his dad died three years ago, because his dad was murdered 12 years ago.
ReplyDeleteThe best part of the episode was this was probably the best Hotch we have seen in years. For way too long, all we have had is dour Hotch, but now we got to see the lightness, humor and love that was season one Hotch. We got to see him being the good dad we know he is, joking around with Madame Bouvier and he was even light enough with Penelope when he was leaving work. I hope they keep this up, but I won’t hold my breath.
I too noticed like half of the team disappeared halfway through the episode. It was rather jarring, particularly since there was no reason given. Reid, Morgan and to a lesser extent, Kate, just up and disappeared. If this season hadn’t already been light on Reid and heavy on JJ, I might just brush over it, but this is part of a disturbing pattern that I hope rectifies soon. However, I wouldn’t bet any money on that happening.
If you listen to the team give the profile again, you will hear how they theorize that the unsub having experienced abuse as a child and being rejected by one or both parents, could be triggered to regress back to that original rejection by a recent rejection.
DeleteVirgil did a great job in putting together this episode and while in real life it may seem far fetched to some, this being TV there has to be some allowance for creative license.
Also, when Hotch/Rossi/JJ are going to the mother's house Garcia finds out about his 'ex-fiance's' marriage and Hotch speculates that the unsub is trying to regain control by re-enacting what his father did to him.
DeleteI interpreted it as why he killed those boys was because he felt such guilt of what he helped his mother do to his father, they buried him in secret after his mother had killed him, and that made him go after boys in his own age at that time because he wanted to punish himself for what he did as a kid, and furthermore he felt he deserved to be punished because his father used to make him feel that way. The boys became surrogates for himself as a kid. But maybe I was wrong :S
DeleteI liked this ep, frankly happy to see less gore, and really trilled to see Hotch having some personal time showing his eclectic acting skills. Contrary to many others, I'm beginning to appreciate the less intense JJ again, and feel they are actually toning her down...thanks for that. Last year's 200 was about all I could take. It was also nice to see some neat interaction between Hotch and Garcia, which they did so well in the past, but was so absent in the past several years. As for little Morgan in this show, probably making amends for his excessive airtime of late. I appreciate all the cast, but agree they've overplayed JJ and Morgan in the past few years so I really find it refreshing to see Hotch in the driver's seat again. Of course, a balance still works the best, but I can also appreciate that that takes really good writing skills, and let's face it, they are not all made equal. I did question Rossi's statement that Halloween was originated out of Christian belief - was it not out of pagan origins..example - All Souls Night - becoming All Saints Day. I'm ending with a 7 vote.
ReplyDeleteWhile I could point you to two articles that very nicely explain how Halloween is of Christian origin, I think that would count as spamming. Nevertheless, it actually has very little to do with pagan/Samhain origins. That came later. Halloween falls on October 31 because of a pope moving All Saints Day to Nov 1 and most modern Halloween traditions are a mesh of French and Irish celebrations of All Souls Day.
DeleteIt wouldn't be the first time a belief system manipulated the facts to suit it's own agenda. I was interested in facts, but obviously it was naïve of me to think that's possible in the wake of an all powerful pope. Guess we'll never know if Rossi got it right LOL.
DeleteI want to say this, alot of people are saying there was too much JJ in this episode. But I 'timed' the scenes and weather people believe it or not, Kate was in as many scenes as JJ was. Reid had a could amount and Morgan was present also. And what scenes each character was in was in my mind quality based and not quanity based.
ReplyDeleteWell said Barb. I'll take quality over quantity any day.
DeleteYou know me Rocky, I'd be the FIRST one moaning and complaining if I for one second thought JJ was being portrayed as she was last season. Heck, after last season I was ready to throw in the the whole CM towel... BUT.... I stepped back and decided to 'not' blindly dislike an episode just because she's in it.... but rather judge each episode based on what I saw.... Yes, I speculate when I read and see spoiler's and yes I might go into an episode completely ready to hate it... BUT, the sign of being a rational adult is being able to alter my opinion if I am proved wrong and admit it.
DeleteThat said
So far this season 1. Yes JJ has been in the show, but I expect that after all she is 'paid' to play the role of JJ. 2. She has been very nicely curbed in the 'super agent JJ' mode and is returning more to what she was prior. 3. Team balance and continuity has been more present then in the past 2 years. Yes, there are some things 'over the top' (i.e. Garcia) but overall it's been nicely done.
So with that... I will wait till next week to have concrete opinion on episode, but I will say. Cinderella Unsub? Not my cup of tea... but then I was never a big fairy tale type person.
And you know me Barb. I've always been I'll look at the cover and read the cover flaps, but I'll make my final judgement when I read the book. ;) So we agree; let it play out on our TV screens and then make our individual "calls" based on our own likes or dislikes.
DeleteWait......... when do you and me become rational adults??? You forgot to send me the memo. :D :D :D
Sorry, Memo got lost in the myriad of writing rationalizing the good, the bad, and the ugly that can sometimes be CM fandom!
DeleteI also like quality over quantity. However, I had a run through of the timings. JJ was in scenes for just under 17 minutes and was there very prominently throughout the second half of the episode. Morgan and Reid totally disappeared at the 23 minute point of a 43 minute episode and Kate vanished a couple of minutes later. I do try very hard to be objective despite their having completely ruined the JJ character for me after all the horrors of last season. I see she has been toned down considerably this season so far but the damage has been done for me and she does still seem to have a much bigger presence than almost everyone else. This episode only Hotch had more screen time. All that said, I did like their discussion about Jack and Henry's Halloween costumes but it will take a lot more than that to win me back on side. But hey, we all view things differently. There would be no point in discussion boards like this if we all felt the same!
DeleteYes quality over quantity, but they should stretch out and balance the scenes, because what is supposed to make me keep watching the episode when halfway through half of the team disappears.
DeleteSo tired of reading all the JJ hate. She has been and always will be my favorite character! That being said, this was another great episode. Loved seeing JJ, Hotch & Rossi team up together. Seldom get to see that. I for one can never get enough of JJ.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I know that's why I stopped coming to this site 2 years ago.I am shocked to see that after two years they're still going strong about hating JJ.I guess I'll be back in another two years to see if there's a nicer atmosphere then.
Deleteroxyhelen,
DeleteMany sites ( have you checked the IMDB msg board for CM lately?) have people complaining about the same things too; some do not like the new JJ and the amount of screentime she gets. Some do like her and wants more. You want more of her, you like JJ? Says so here or at some other places. People who do not like JJ are vocal, why can't you and others who like her be vocal too? If you read the comments in this thread many have said they liked JJ in this episode ( read my comment ) ,
Remember people, the comments reflect what those who choose to comments think, not what does who stays silent think.
CMRT admin
I don't think JJ needs more screen time than she already has. Also, I do like her but she isn't my favourite character. My favourite character has always been Prentiss, followed by Reid. There's a difference between being vocal and repeating the same thing over and over and over and over(see how annoying that is?). It doesn't bother me that people hate JJ it's fictional character for God's sake but I just can't stand that virtually every other comment(usually) states "It was a good/bad episode. But as usual, too much JJ." and proceed to rant about the overuse of JJ and/or how she needs to go.I just get fed up.It's the reason I don't visit those other sites you mention too.I hope I make myself clear: It's not the idea that bothers me(altough sometimes I disagree) it's the repetitiveness. But that's ok, as I mention my solution is simple: I simply don't visit the sites, no biggie.
DeleteBtw, they've been complaining for three years and still nothing has changed.Which means a)the writers do not care about the fans opinion or b) the JJ haters are actually in minority and the majority of people don't mind her. Either way, it seems fruitless. And annoying.
Odd. I continue to feel entitled to express my displeasure regarding the overuse of the JJ character. I find your annoyance annoying. Hopefully all opinions expressed that are done so respectfully will continue to be welcome.
DeleteI think things have changed - this season we have certainly so far seen a toning down of JJ's character even though she still is seemingly omnipresent. Someone must have been reading and listening to the discontent at least a little. So as long as they still do things I disagree with in every episode, I will still comment after every episode. Everyone is entitled to give an opinion and to repeat it if necessary.
DeleteZayrina and Mary I absolutely agree with you.Everyone is entitled to an opinion.Nowhere did I say people shouldn't voice their opinions. As a matter of fact, if you read my comments more carefully you'll see that my solution to my problem isn't to get everyone to stop voicing an opinion, it's simply to not visit certain websites anymore.I haven't read comments here in two years and after today, I won't read them anymore for at least two years. Before doing so, I expressed my opinion since I'm entitled to one as well right? My mistake, I should have said it's annoying to me not just it's annoying(because it sounds like I'm saying I think that's the absolute truth when in fact I'm aware it's just my opinion).
DeleteI say 9. Reid, Morgan and Kate's disappearing didn't bother me because it made sense.
ReplyDeleteThe Hotch moments were nice, but at the beginning, I kept thinking: "Wow, Greg Montgomery is making a cameo." Not a bad thing!
While I liked the episode, I found it hard to take seriously. I felt that they were going for cheap thrills at times.
Still. 9/10.
Why did half of the team disappearing make sense? Baffles me. Maybe if they put Kate in with Hotch and JJ for the second half that would be better because they are all parents and would have the most connection to the case.
DeleteWhen the unsub finally gave up the boy's location I was so hoping it would be Kate, Morgan, Reid (and Hotch of course) finding the boy as if they were following behind the rest, but no. Or at least if it was only Hotch & Rossi going to rescue the boy and JJ could stay behind with the unsub and the mom. I think those scenarios would have made the most sense.
I totally disagree that only BAU members who are parents are best to deal with parents and kids. They are all trained to deal with any kind of situation or victim or unsub. All of them are empathetic (well, i'm not so sure about Kate, as she shows some tendencies toward being a bully). I hate the misguided slant on this program that non-parents can't possibly know what parents are going through. It's insulting to those of us who aren't parents but care very much about kids. I would venture to posit that Reid and Morgan know a thing or two about what parents go through with their kids.
DeleteSuegypt, Oh that's not what I meant--I was just trying to say that others should have been more included, not that since the rest aren't parents that they can't deal with families. I was just stating a way they could have included Kate more. Of course Reid and Morgan should have been included with parent interactions as well
DeleteI read the two interviews that TG gave for the episode and in each, he explained what part of the "thought process" was for the episode. The writer, Virgil Williams, wanted to show the differences between "good parents" (Hotch, JJ, Rossi) and the "bad parents" (Bidwell's parents). I will say again I give kudos to Virgil for remembering that Rossi is a parent as well. And one could say Rossi technically was a parent for less than a day. It's my feeling that burying a child is the most difficult thing a parent must deal with, far less a newborn one; he qualifies. Is that a commentary on Morgan and Reid's abilities in my mind? Absolutely not. In my world, those three agents just showed the writer's symbolism. Should Kate have been included in the mix because she is a parent as well? One could definitely state that. And far be it for me to second-guess why Williams didn't include her. For me, she is still new so I enjoyed seeing the three established parents with that history for the writer's symbolism.
DeleteWould I have liked it to switch to Kate, Morgan and Reid after they interviewed the mom?
DeleteYes, I would have.
Would that have been the way they'd have done it in an earlier season? Yes, but this isn't an earlier season!
It had to be Hotch. Who else was there was, for me, just extra baggage, so I don't begrudge Kate, Morgan and Reid not being there. And Maybe they did need to take the Mom along and maybe they were closer and it wouldn't have worked for the others to go.
Also: if what you are looking for is JJ. that's what you'l find. I was looking for Kate and Reid, and I was pleased with what I saw.
ReplyDeleteI'm not looking for JJ,but I find her all over many episodes. A Thousand Suns managed to make a very good balance of all characters. Why can't more of the episodes be like that?
DeleteIs Reid wearing a fright wig on the plane going home?
ReplyDelete
