CRIMINAL MINDS posted its best viewers delivery since Sept. 21, 2011 (season premiere) and best performances in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since Nov. 16, 2011. CRIMINAL MINDS topped the special of "Touch" (11.87m) in viewers.

Playing the straight-and-narrow man can take its toll on an actor, particularly if the role is Aaron “Hotch” Hotchner and the show is CBS’ gleefully diabolical, often pitch-black procedural Criminal Minds.

Celebrating the broadcast of the show’s 150th episode this week (Wednesday, 9 p.m.), Golden Globe-nominated actor Thomas Gibson is the polar opposite of the frequently furrow-browed Hotch—light, easygoing, and ready to laugh, even at himself. “Hotch’s fatal flaw is that he takes his job a little too seriously, and that can lead to an early grave,” says the 49-year old Gibson. “I work hard, but I leave it at the office. You have to.” Gibson, also much-loved for his roles on Chicago Hope and Dharma & Greg, shares some tips for blowing off some steam between cracking the byzantine brains of Criminal’s iniquitous masterminds.

Men’s Health: Television production schedules can be rigorous, 12 hours a day. That’s a lot of time to be playing in shadows. How do you shake that off?

Thomas Gibson: Yeah, you really need a way to shake off the day, but also to build the strength and stamina for the next one. That’s something Hotch hasn’t quite figured out yet. I’ve always been involved in sports as a kid. I swam competitively as a kid. I played all the team sports—baseball, football, and soccer. But I also went to summer camp for a few years where we were exposed to team handball and track & field and marksmanship and skeet shooting, all kinds of stuff. There were certain things that stuck. There was a counselor there who thought I had some tennis potential. So I played for a while. Summer I was 13, my grandfather and my father taught me how to play golf. I took lessons that summer, and I played everyday that summer. I probably would’ve kept playing, except I realized that girls don’t watch golf; they watch tennis. So I let my golf game go dormant and started playing tennis.

“Criminal Minds” celebrates its 150th episode with a special storyline about a serial rapist in Houston, TX. Series star A.J. Cook, who plays Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, says she can’t wait to see it because they have pulled out all the stops.

“The best way to describe this episode is to expect the unexpected,” says the Canadian actress. “He is a serial rapist and you think you know which way it is going and then there is a twist and a turn, another twist and a freefall.”

In the episode, titled “Unknown Subject,” the Behavioral Analysis Unit [BAU] team searches for a serial rapist in Houston known as “The Piano Man” who has resurfaced and is revisiting and assaulting his previous victims.

Going into tonight’s milestone 150th episode of Criminal Minds, executive producer Erica Messer was in a difficult position.

To mark their 100th episode, the show brought back one of its most terrifying villains to date, C. Thomas Howell as the Reaper, and concluded with the death of Hotch’s (Thomas Gibson) wife. A big episode to say the least. Fifty episodes later, Messer was tasked with marking the occasion in another big way. But how? “We knew nothing was going to be as big as the 100th was for us, with Hotch and the Reaper and Haley being killed. We also knew nothing was going to be bigger for Prentiss (Paget Brewster) than what we’ve already done,” she tells EW. “It felt false to revisit [Emily's story] in a traditional sense and more about just touching base on what she’s been going through off screen.”

The Playboy Club got cancelled after a mere two shows back in October. The cutthroat response to a highly-anticipated show, like Playboy, further proved that networks aren’t playing around these days, not at all. So, when a show makes it to episode 150, there is definitely cause for celebration. Criminals Minds will reach this coveted milestone tonight with “Unknown Subject.” The Subject may be unknown but what is clear is that A.J. Cook (JJ) is definitely crucial to the show. Her fans made this evident last year by lobbying for her return to the series; her short sabbatical obviously didn’t take. We talked with Cook about tonight’s episode featuring a “top-shelf creepy” unsub, the “Piano Man.”

How are you today?

So far so good. Just dropped my son off at school and I’ve been flirting with the women of Criminal Minds via text all morning...love letters back and forth that started last night [laughs].

Congrats on 150 episodes, what does this mean for a modern day network show?

It’s bananas...everyday I just sort of think, how did I get here? It’s so great to be on a show and get to 100, let alone 150. So, we feel pretty lucky and we’re definitely not taking it for granted.

Tells us about tonight, we get to see the “Piano Man” return to assault his previous victims?

Ahhh, the “Piano Man.” Well, we have some great guest stars per usual because our casting is incredible and this killer comes back, and we are not sure if it’s a copy cat or what’s going on...then there’s the personal stuff, which I really love. Prentiss is trying to come to terms with what had happened and all that.

After 127 spend playing the same character, what keeps you excited about waking up and going to work every morning?

AJ Cook: Well this season in particular I feel like it’s a new show. We went through a bunch of changes and in a way it was a blessing in disguise because it gave us the creative license to change things and to try different things with these characters.

Criminal Minds is hitting another milestone: 150 episodes.

Riding strong in season 7, the CBS procedural has had its share of headline-making news with numerous cast departures -- and subsequent returns. Still, the show -- centered on an eclectic team of profilers in the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) -- continues to average nearly 13 million total viewers per week in its current season and showing no signs of significant ratings deterioration.

"Episode 200 would be during season 9 so bring us back. It's not that far away.," showrunner Erica Messer half-joked to The Hollywood Reporter, referencing network-mate NCIS' big feat airing Feb. 7.

Messer, who has been with Criminal Minds since the very beginning, chatted with THR on two separate occasions -- once in November during filming and again just one day before air -- about the show evolution, details of episode 150 (suspect: serial rapist called The Piano Man) and hints at the season 7 finale (hint: it's two hours).

The Hollywood Reporter: Seven seasons and still going strong. How has Criminal Minds evolved?

Erica Messer: The one thing we've been able to continue to do is tell fresh and compelling stories. Early on people were afraid this show wouldn't have enough bad guys to last a year and here we are seven years in. The way we've evolved is really through our characters. Paget Brewster is already bracing for the fan reaction.

"There's a nice little moment between Prentiss and Hotch in the episode," she tells TVGuide.com of Criminal Minds' 150th installment airing Wednesday. "I know the fans who want Hotch and Prentiss together are going to go nuts! They're totally gonna lose it. I can already picture it. People really want them to date for some reason and I think this will just add to that."

Unfortunately for Hotch (Thomas Gibson) and Prentiss (Brewster) 'shippers, a romance is unlikely — for now at least, especially with his budding relationship with Beth (Bellamy Young) — but that doesn't make the duo's moment any less significant. In fact, it's a major turning point in Prentiss' life as she finally processes coming back from the "dead" after Hotch and JJ (A.J. Cook) faked her death to evade her IRA nemesis Ian Doyle (Timothy V. Murphy) last season.

TVLine invited showrunner Erica Messer to reveal how she found a new twist to mark the landmark occasion, weigh in on some fans’ most fervent wish and share a taste of the Season 7 finale.

TVLINE | Our readers have been very much looking forward to Episode 150. What opportunity did you see here, with this landmark outing?

It’s interesting because with our 100th episode, Hotch went head-to-head with the Reaper, and we didn’t have a story like that for the 150th. One, because you’re not really going to get any better than Hotch versus his nemesis, and two, because the Prentiss version of that happened last season and culminated in the premiere this year. So by the time we get to the 150th we didn’t want to manufacture something, so we looked at what we do every week, which is use our wits to save a victim who’s been in captivity since at least the end of Act 1. We took that and put it on its head and said, “What if this time around a victim actually has an unsub [in captivity], and the victory will be if the team can get her to not kill somebody?” And whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

SOME ACTORS, ESPECIALLY those particularly associated with one role, squeeze in as many side projects as possible, playing roles as varied as they can. Thomas Gibson would seem like a prime candidate to employ such a strategy, but he doesn’t, even though he has starred as the super-serious FBI profiler Aaron Hotchner for seven seasons on the hit CBS series Criminal Minds.

“There are other things I want to do,” Gibson says. “I love working. I actually miss the theatre a great deal, and would like to do more. There’s a little short film I want to direct, and I actually want to pursue my directing career, but I work in Los Angeles and live in Texas, and my wife and I have got a 12-year-old, a nine-year-old and a seven-year-old.

“I commute back and forth between California and Texas pretty much on a weekly basis, and have done so the entire run of Criminal Minds,” he continues. “That schedule is regular enough, at least for an actor, to have a reasonably normal life, rather than the incredible unpredictability of features and of theatre too. My family is my priority.

'Criminal Minds' is one of the most watched shows on Wednesday nights and star Thomas Gibson, who plays Aaron Hotchner, took a few minutes to talk to talk with us. His early television work included roles on such shows as “Leg Work”, “As the World Turns”, and “Another World”. He began to appear on film with the feature “Far and Away”, and appeared in a string of independent films before returning to television. He starred in the series, “Chicago Hope”, and then became a household name with his role in the comedy, “Dharma and Greg”.

The tenth episode of Criminal Minds aired taking us halfway through the season. The first half, especially the first episode, was an interesting one as they found a way to wrap up the chaos that was season six. Were you ever concerned with how they were going to pull it all together and get everyone back in place for the season?

Well, there were so many vectors involved that needed to be pulled together. I knew that there was a plan in case everything came together and there was a plan in case some things did and some things didn’t come together. So I’m glad thought that they were able to utilize ‘plan A’ which was pulling everybody together.

According to Deadline, you actually only renewed your contract with Criminal Minds two weeks before shooting began. Did you ever think that the contract dispute may have an effect on the season for yourself?

Well, I was hoping that it wouldn’t and I don’t think that it has. It just took that much time. These negotiations are always drawn out and this was no exception. I was hoping as the deadline for the season got closer – I know that there are other contract negotiations that have gotten even closer to the wire than two weeks, but I was hoping that this wasn’t going to be one of them. Fortunately, we were able to make a deal with a couple of weeks still to go. I think we were all hoping for the best outcome and we got it. So, you know, I know there was a ‘plan B’ but I’m just glad ‘plan B’ didn’t have to be implemented.

But will Prentiss open up to this therapist, or will the revelations about her missing time come from her rumored "serious" conversation with Hotch (Thomas Gibson)? Given that this storyline is taking place in such a landmark episode, should we have high expectations for this insight into Prentiss' mindset, or do you do think the case-of-the-week will be the main focus?

In an episode set to air February 15th, it looks like JJ (A.J. Cook) will be getting into an altercation with an UnSub where her life could be on the line. But how did JJ wind up in this situation? Is it another case of a team member being personally targeted by an UnSub or did JJ merely end up in the wrong place at the wrong time? It appears that the fight could get physical, and though we know JJ is an excellent shot, will she be forced to take down the UnSub on her own or will the team arrive to back her up before things get out of hand? And now that JJ is a full-fledged profiler, will this confrontation make her think twice about her new role on the team or confirm that she was prepared for all the possible challenges of her new position?

“I think his head would explode,” Gubler says with a laugh. “He’s read every book in the world, but probably nothing Anna Wintour has done. HE’S GOT THE LOOK

Gubler’s initial foray into the fashion world was accidental: In 2001, while attending New York University film school, he was approached by a scout for a Kate Spade campaign. Before long, “I’m in Paris opening up a Louis Vuitton show,” Gubler says. “I’m like, ‘Holy smokes—I have to walk up there and not laugh!’ It was a thing I knew very little about. A boxer’s whose son is dying from leukemia loses control when he is struck by ‘blood lust’ which makes him beat people to death. Meawhile, Hotch meets an interesting woman while training for the FBI triathlon.

This episode had guest stars Shawn Hatosy from Southland fame and Charles S Dutton who did among other things Without a Trace. There was a lot to like about this episode; excellent acting from Thomas Gibson, Hatosy and Dutton, who all had great scenes to shine in. Good writing. Attention spent on the details of the world of small time boxing, from the coach who drinks and bets against his boxer, to the washed up boxer who doesn’t know anything else but fighting but who is nothing more than a punching bag for other boxers. The boxing scenes looked good and not faked and so was the boxing club. The scene with the little boy passing was a powerful one. Great acting by Thomas Gibson in that scene! Another great scene was when Jimmy, the unsub, killed his coach. Dutton’s character pleading for his life, telling Jimmy, that like him he was dad was one of the better moments of this episode.

The Hotch and Beth meeting was, as some fans have said, yes awkward especially on Hotch’s part. He looked shy and a bit unsure but that is understandable. When was the last time Hotch dated? Probably way back in high school when he met Haley. It was refreshing to see a woman going after a man she found interesting. Loved that Hotch showed some of his humor when he asked her if she was training for surveillance! It was high time that Hotch got something to smile about in his private life that is not about his son. Small detail, funny that she is the one who gave him her information but he didn’t give her his.

One thing I love is the friendship between Hotch and Rossi. Those two are first friends and it shows. Loved the scene where Rossi tells Hotch that ‘distracted is good!’ Loved that in the last scene, in Hotch’s office, Dave showed Hotch some support by asking him if he would meet with Beth on the weekend.

Oh and poor Reid who didn’t get the bicycle reference but Garcia sure did, just look at the look she gave Hotch!

Favorite scene was the plane scene where everyone were gossiping about Hotch’s love life and Garcia got carried away until she realized that Hotch was there and heard it all.

Although, I did enjoy this episode more than Janine Sherman Barrois’ previous one, this one was, again, us watching the unsub do what he does. Although we got some profiling, as a long time viewer, I much prefer episodes where we get to learn about the unsub via the team profiling them. Episodes like ‘Brother’s in Arms ‘and ‘Catching Out’ are episodes where all we get to know comes from the team’s work. Another problem with episodes that have us watching the unsub do what he does is that there are no mysteries. With this episode, we knew who did it, why and when from the promo and the first 2 minutes of the episode. What was left was for the team to catch up with him. As a viewer, the previous episode where we get to guess who the killer is and why throughout the whole episode was much better because we still get to guess who and why until the end. We never get to lose interest.

Yes, the episode was violent but unlike Janine’s previous episodes, I didn’t feel like the violence was over the top like in the ‘Thirteen step’ where the violence was almost glamourized for the YouTube generation. This time we had a boxer who was losing control over his blood lust, who had for weapons his hands so yes it got messy but it never felt exploitative.

If I was to rank this episode despite being one that again was a ‘watching the unsub’ episode I would rank it in my top three for this season, a season that is so far turning out to be a much better one that last season!

Q) What are the current projects that you are working on?

A) Currently, I am working on a scruffy little show on CBS called "Criminal Minds." I just finished doing a play over Christmas. Right now, I am in the middle of working on my theater company's award show so I am rehearsing for that. I am also in the middle of filming the Super Bowl episode for "Criminal Minds."

Q) Please tell us about your character Penelope Garcia on "Criminal Minds."

A) She is the resident hacker for Quantico, in general, for the FBI, but she has sweetly and whimsically weaseled her way in to being invaluable for the Behavior Analysis Unit. She has quite an affection for the people that work in that group and she gets what they are doing. It's a big huge challenge for her. She's very eccentric. She's a total geek, but in a really hot way. She's got really fantastic shoes!

Q) What's new this season for the show and your character?

A) This season, thus far, we've gotten to see what kind of car Penelope drives, which is fantastic. You, actually, see that I have legs because I am walking around a lot more than I was last year. I believe in an upcoming episode I am not in the office at all! I go a whole episode where I am never in the Quantico office. I can't make any guarantees, but I think that might be in the cards. Everyone has sort of melded and molded into a delightful crime drama sandwich that makes everything compliment each other now so much. Last year, everyone was trying to get their sea legs about it. The writers were trying to figure out our characters and we were trying to figure out the writing. It was so great, but there is this sort of effortlessness about it right now where everybody just sort of gets it. It's just sort of moves along as entertaining, but yet creepy. It turns things into more of a puzzle than it was last year. I think there is a lot more thinking outside of the box, which I do enjoy. I don't like being in the box. So, as far away from the box that you can get I am a big fan of. And, I think we do that!

Q) What are the current projects that you are working on?

A) Right now, I am working on a series for CBS called "Criminal Minds." It's a recurring character and I play Haley Hotchner who is the wife of Aaron Hotch. Right now, we're just introducing my character and showing that he has a family life. I was pregnant in the beginning and I've given birth. We'll see what will happen down the road. Hopefully, something good and juicy will come up. Maybe one of the serial killers will hit too close to home, we'll see.

Q) You play the character Haley Hotchner on "Criminal Minds." What did they tell you about the character when you originally signed on?

A) They had said it was a small character to start off with. She was one of the wives of the team and they had some pretty exciting storylines if the show got picked up for the entire year. They had some exciting storylines that they wanted to write for her if the show got picked up and continued on next year. They just left it kind of intriguing saying this is where she is at now, but we have some exciting stuff for where she can go, too. They left it mysterious and intriguing so I thought what the heck! It sounded fun!

Q) What made you want to be a part of this show?

A) I really liked the pilot that I had read. I thought it was good and fun. I've always kind of liked thriller-mystery television shows and books. I've always been intrigued by that kind of stuff. I read the script and it always deals with different serial killers. It's not just different police cases. It's serial killers that are tracked by this special team. I thought this was something interesting and it's different.

Q) How was it getting to work with such acting greats like Mandy Patinkin, Thomas Gibson and Shemar Moore?

A) I think it's going to be more exciting as I, hopefully, get more to do on the show. It's wonderful working with Thomas because he's the one who plays my husband, obviously. I've only gotten to get quick little exchanges with Shemar and Mandy, whether it's seeing them on the set or at table reads. I'm looking forward, hopefully, to having more scenes with them.

Thomas Gibson did a 180 when he took the role of a hardened FBI behavioral analyst in the CBS drama Criminal Minds. His somber character Aaron Hotchner couldn’t be more different from preppy newlywed Greg Montgomery in Dharma & Greg, which ran from 1997 to 2002. Gibson, 49, is OK with Hotchner’s dark side on the show, now in season 7. He’s been a fan of crime stories since he was a kid growing up on Charleston, S.C., with a leaning toward “quirkier’’ detective shows, like Columbo, Kojak and The Rockford Files. He admits that Criminal Minds, which focuses on what make killers tick, is heavier fare. But alluring nonetheless. “I am always fascinated reading about these kinds of cases, serial crimes, when I come across them. It’s always interesting to me to see what happened to this [person] that took them from one place that was more functional to this place of severe dysfunction. Maybe there was a little bit of that brain chemistry that was different, but they started out essentially the same as you and me.’’ As if Hotchner’s career weren’t depressing enough. Twists and turns in the scripts that followed had him facing unthinkable tragedy in his personal life: the crumbling of his marriage and ultimately the death of his wife. No worries; things may lighten up soon. “We’re exploring colors that are potentially available to him,’’ he explains.

Criminal Minds 7.09 – “Self Fulfilling Prophecy”, written by Erica Messer

“Self Fulfilling Prophecy” was filled with twists and turns and a surprising development with Strauss.

The episode takes place at Somerville Academy, a military school for boys. Both Strauss and Garcia accompany the team on the trip. There seems to be a rash of student suicides at the school that started with the hanging of a first year student named Bailey. Several weeks later, during an unsupervised survival test, five more students are found hanging. There is one student, Josh Redding, who is missing from the group.

The team discovers that Josh Redding is the common link between the suicides. They begin to wonder if Josh actually killed the other students. Their investigation is greatly hampered by the fact that Col. Massey, played by René Auberjonois, is hiding facts from the team and misleading them. He and his lieutenant, Tawes, have been running the school for the past thirty years. Massey and Tawes, with the help of some of their favourite cadets, have been abusing the younger cadets in order to break them. Since Massey doesn’t want the truth about his treatment of the cadets to be discovered, he is more than willing to place the blame on Josh. In the meantime, he has Tawes out hunting down Josh to kill him. Massey seldom makes and maintains eye contact with any of the team members who are questioning him.

Eventually, the team uncovers the clues, discovers that Josh didn’t actually kill the students in the woods, but Bailey’s father did. Massey has set up Josh, hoping Bailey’s father will kill him as well. Josh is the only cadet that Massey and Tawes could never break. Just as Tawes is getting ready to kill Josh, Hotch and Morgan arrive on the scene and are able to keep either man from killing the other.

During the course of the investigation, Morgan learns that Strauss has a drinking problem. He confronts Hotch about it. Hotch said that Strauss had been getting help. Obviously, it wasn’t enough help! The episode ends with Morgan getting ready to take Strauss to a rehab clinic and see that she gets checked in privately.

This episode was well written and well directed. I enjoyed it very much. I didn’t however like Morgan’s confrontation with Hotch. Morgan seems to have a chip on his shoulder lately and I wish he would lose his attitude. I am glad that Erica followed up on what was going on with Strauss at the end of last season.

It’s hard to believe that the one-time star of Dharma & Greg is now the best-known profiler on Criminal Minds, but that’s exactly the case for Thomas Gibson.

I caught up with TV’s “Aaron Hotchner” to discuss his character, the success of the show, and why television audiences like to be scared.

I want to start by asking you about the character of Aaron Hotchner, do you think he’s finally in the category of iconic crime fighter like Fox Mulder or Andy Sipowicz?

Wow, when you say ‘iconic crimefighter’ I gotta go with Kojak and Columbo. I don’t know. That’s certainly not up to me. It’s certainly a nice idea to have had him been around long enough to consider it.

Will we ever find out more about his backstory and why he joined the agency?

I think one of the most interesting questions about the job and about the people who really do the job and us who play them on TV is what exactly got them from point A to point B. It’s not as interesting to give a full drawing of where it came from. It’s much more interesting to put it together on your own or at least put certain pieces of the puzzle together on your own and you have got these spaces in the middle where you don’t quite know.

How do the writers come up with the storylines? Do they just research all these killers or are they just twisted people themselves?

[Laughs] I don’t think that they are necessarily twisted people but I think that they have done all of their research on these twisted cases and criminals and I think you can’t help but be affected by it. I think all of our stories do germinate in some sort of real case. And then of course, elements of it get excised for many reasons and all these other elements get added to them for the sake of dramatic license.

With shows like yours and American Horror Story increasing in popularity, do you think viewers have just embraced the fact that they like seeing evil on TV and being scared? Have we moved past cookie cutter sitcoms like dare I say it, Dharma & Greg?

I take exception to the analogy to the cookie-cutter sitcom analogy with Dharma & Greg! I am just kidding, obviously. I think these shows and these trends are cyclical. A couple of my favourite shows when I was a kid were The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits and to me those were really scary. They certainly fell out of favour for a while as did the cop show and the medical show and the sitcom. I think any formula or any kind of cookie-cutter type genre can be revived with good writing.

Criminal Minds Review Episode 7.08 'Hope'

In the latest episode of Criminal Minds entitled Hope the team searches for an unsub who they believe is responsible for not only kidnapping a little girl, but abducting the girl’s mother years later. The episode written by Kimberly Ann Harrison did a wonderful job showing the audience how mothers of missing children never give up hope in their desperate search to find their children, no matter how much time passes. I thought the story was a believable and well thought out one. I believed with all my heart that any mother in Monica’s situation would have done the exact same thing. To me the best scene in the episode was at the gas station. Monica was given a choice: to either walk away and call the police (but take the chance she would never see her daughter again) or go with the unsub willingly (with the hope they she would see her again.) Monica never hesitated she ran straight for the truck and waited for the unsub to return. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t do the exact same thing under those circumstances.

While the episode did focus on Garcia it still had some great team moments. Hotch presenting the case to the team for Garcia was a kind but subtle gesture. JJ walking Garcia through the moments before Monica’s abduction was wonderful; to me it showed just how much the team trusted one another. The team also had some great profiling moments throughout the entire episode. Those kind of profiling moments have been missing in the past and I was very glad to see them back. The only really bad thing about the episode was the ending. Garcia talking to the unsub on the phone I could buy, but her going into the house was so unbelievable to me. I have a hard enough time with Garcia presenting the cases to the team, but her becoming a hostage negotiator even under these circumstances lost it for me. I loved that Monica shot and killed the unsub in the end. This man not only abducted and raped both her and her daughter, but was also directly responsible for the daughter taking her own life. Who could really blame her?

All in all I thought the episode was a good one. Believable up until the very end, if Garcia had not have walked into the house it would scored a 10 in my book. It wasn’t suspenseful, but it didn’t need to be. I guessed the unsub was a member of support group in the first scene, however it did tell a wonderful story of a mother’s love and sacrifice. In my opinion if an episode make you stop and think what you might do in the same situation it is a good story, this episode did exactly that for me. I hope we get many more just like it.

After getting a flood of emails from Criminal Minds fans asking me about the 150th episode, I knew I had to toss in a few questions about it when I hopped on the phone with Thomas Gibson literally a few hours ago to chat about Hotch’s upcoming possible romance (more on that soon!). And while details on the case are a little premature to reveal, he did talk about the rumored revealing scene between Hotch and Emily. “It’s a really nice scene, and it touches on where she was in her personal and professional life in the last year when she was dead,” Gibson reveals. “And it also allows Hotch to reveal a little bit to her about what goes on with him. He says at one point that he’s tired of being profiled through his office window, where prying eyes are wondering what’s going on when he’s talking to people….There’s some really great stuff between these two. I’m hoping people will tune in and like it.”

Musical scores are crucial to a host of TV series, but no other show uses background music as extensively as Criminal Minds. It can make a scary serial killer almost unbearably stomach-turning, or transform a brightly lit police station into midnight at Dracula's castle.
The show's cues, which is what TV and film people call the individual sequences that play as scenes unfold, may lack the lyrics and catchy melodies of the songs on Glee, and they may not sound like music to most viewers, but they can help define character and mood as much as anything that appears on the screen.

Marc and Steffan Fantini, raised at Broad and Dickinson in South Philadelphia, now living in L.A., are two of the three not-so-criminal minds behind the music of the show.
Some of their tricks sound as weird as the psycho killers who populate the disturbing series, which follows a fictional team from the real FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit who jet around in search of the country's worst criminals. The audience eats it up. In its first run, Wednesdays on CBS, Minds is No. 11 in the ratings this season, and reruns are flourishing in syndication on the ION network and cable's A&E. The series plays in more than 50 countries.

"We often take a sound and distort it and destroy it, since the show is so dark and creepy," Steffan Fantini said in telephone interview. "A violin being bowed with a kitchen utensil on the rustiest string makes a horrible, ugly sound, which works so well under these heinous crimes."

Hurrah! Excellent news - Criminal Minds' sixth season is out on DVD today. To celebrate, we've already brought you a chat with Thomas Gibson. But hey, don't say we don't spoil you - we've got a bit of bonus natter with Matthew Gray Gubler (Spencer Reid).

Matthew recently chatted to reporters about working on the show, so read on to find out how he feels about directing, what show he'd love to be in, and why he likes painting pictures of bunny rabbits...

So, how's Criminal Minds?

"It's going well!"

You act, direct, make films, paint, have your own music label... do you work at night?

"I do! I get very little sleep. But I try to stay constantly busy. My fear is that if I stop working I'll, like, die. So throughout my life I've always tried to remain busy, and I sort of know no other way. I think if my heart rate slowed it would affect my constitution, strangely. I've been trained to do that. My parents instilled a very strong work ethic in me from a young age, fortunately."

So do you finish work on the show and go straight into doing something else in the evening?

"That's sort of my only vacation. Especially with a show this dark - we're so focused on this darkness, darkness, darkness that when I get home the best thing for me to do is to, like, paint a picture of a bunny rabbit or try to do something funny or make something funny. Something that's completely different to give that part of my brain a bit of a rest."

There's nothing like a good crime drama to settle into, and if you fancy a bit of a binge you're in luck - the sixth season of Criminal Minds is out on DVD on Monday!

To celebrate the excellent news, Digital Spy and a couple of other reporters caught up with Thomas Gibson, who plays Hotch, for a bit of Criminal Minds chat...

How did you feel about the drama surrounding AJ Cook and Paget Brewster? Are you glad to have them back?

"Of course I'm glad they're back. I think we were all taken by surprise by the move on the part of the network last year to curtail their appearances on the show. I don't think there was any good reason for it - I don't think there was any reason for it whatsoever. We're still trying to understand what the motivation was. But regardless of what it was, we're very happy to be on this side of that development and having them both come back."

What makes Criminal Minds different from other procedurals?

"I think it's the fact that instead of physical forensics, it's psychological forensics. I think that's basically what sets it apart, as well as the character development. These are interesting stories, these are universal stories, because unfortunately the cases that we deal with are some of the darker sides of human nature.

"I think those are universal themes, and trying to explain why a particular person made that horrible choice to do such a terrible thing over and over again, and these characters do try to kind of unlock the motivations and therefore the case in order to find them.

"But also the fact that there's character development. I think some of the procedurals when the genre first rolled out 10, 12, 15 years ago, there seemed to be a focus on the procedure itself and not the characters at all. I think one of the things that's developed over the last 10 years or so is you have the reintroduction of interesting characters in these procedurals.

"So I think that's maybe one of the reasons that this show's been successful. We all work very well together, it's an interesting and good group of actors and the characters are all very complementary to each other as well. Somewhere in there is maybe one of the reasons it's working."

It may seem like an unlikely request from a 14-year-old boy, but to Jack Frank, meeting the cast of Criminal Minds was the coolest thing he could ever imagine.

Jack is currently battling with a life-threatening kidney disease, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation stepped in to grant the teen his dream of getting up close and personal with Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, A.J. Cook, Shemar Moore, & Matthew Gray Gubler.
As it turns out, the dark series inspired Jack to set his sights on a career with the FBI when he grows up, but after an afternoon with the gang, he may be taking a liking to this showbiz stuff after all.

RANCHO MIRAGE — A gambler-turned-murderer was spotted in the desert and welcomed with open arms as “Criminal Minds” shot an episode for its seventh season.

The television drama, which delves into the work of an elite group of profilers who analyze the nation's most dangerous minds to thwart their next crime, filmed Monday and Tuesday at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, turning the Rancho Mirage business into a bustling Atlantic City spot.

The show's stars Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler and Thomas Gibson were not on set Tuesday, but guest star Dean Cain took over the blackjack tables and the spotlight.

“‘Criminal Minds' is very unique in that the guest star comes in and you get to create a whole new world,” said Cain, whose usually kind eyes and jet-black hair were crazed and tousled for the role.

SURVIVOR: SOUTH PACIFIC, CRIMINAL MINDS and CSI all notched week-to-week growth in viewers and adults 18-49 leading CBS to a nightly win in viewers, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for Wednesday, Nov. 16.

SURVIVOR: SOUTH PACIFIC was first in households (6.9/11), viewers (11.52m), adults 25-54 (4.5/11) and second in adults 18-49 (3.3/09). Compared to last week, SURVIVOR: SOUTH PACIFIC was up +6% in households (from 6.5/10), +5% in adults 25-54 (from 4.3/11), +3% in adults 18-49 (from 3.2/09) and added +720,000 viewers (from 10.80m, +7%).

CRIMINAL MINDS was first in households (7.9/12) and viewers (12.54m) while averaging 4.6/10 in adults 25-54 and 3.7/09 in adults 18-49. Compared to last week, CRIMINAL MINDS was up +11% in households (from 7.1/11), +7% in adults 25-54 (from 4.3/10), +9% in adults 18-49 (from 3.4/09) and added +1.18m viewers (from 11.36m, +10%).

CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION was first in households (6.7/11), viewers (10.51m), adults 25-54 (3.4/08) and tied for first in adults 18-49 (2.6/07, with ABC). Compared to last week, CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION was up +3% in households (from 6.5/11), +4% in adults 18-49 (from 2.5/07), even in adults 25-54 and added +350,000 viewers (from 10.16m, +3%).

For the night, CBS was first in households (7.2/11), viewers (11.52m), second in adults 25-54 (4.2/10) and averaged 3.2/08 in adults 18-49.
